Cultural references
- During the opening sequence when Kang and Kodos introduce the episode, a Cylon (from Battlestar Galactica) and a Borg (from Star Trek) are in the audience.
- "Life's a Glitch, Then You Die" is a reference to the phrase "Life's a bitch, then you die."
- The title "Desperately Xeeking Xena" is a reference to the 1985 comedy Desperately Seeking Susan.
- Moe's phone call is a reference to the movie Scream referring to having a poor excuse for a plot hole.
- "Clobber Girl" is a parody of "Clabber Girl" brand of baking powder.
- Personages waiting in line for the exodus spaceship named by Lisa are Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, Michael Jordan, Paul McCartney, Michelle Kwan. Also present in line and not named by Lisa are Jimmy Carter, Ron Howard, Merl Reagle, Mark McGwire.
- Homer tells the guard of the rocket heading to Mars that he is the piano genius from the movie Shine and that his name is Shiney McShine. The character's real name is David Helfgott.
- The first part of this episode is a parody of the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer.
- "Life's a Glitch, Then You Die" parodies the Y2K panic as well as When Worlds Collide.
- The band playing at New Year's Rockin' Eve is actually Ratt according to the drumset. The band members thought they were either Quiet Riot, Poison or Whitesnake.
- The names Comic Book Guy (as his supervillain alter-rgo The Collector) wishes to be called are: Obi-Wan, Iron Man, Mr. Mxyzptlk, and Big Papa Smurf.
- After The Collector falls into the tank full of Lucite and climbs out, he struggles to strike a "classic Lorne Greene pose from Battlestar Galactica" before the Lucite hardens.
Trivia
- "Treehouse of Horror X" is the last "Treehouse of Horror" special to premiere in October, save for season 21's "Treehouse of Horror XX".
- Up until Treehouse of Horror XXIV, this is the last Treehouse of Horror to date with a couch gag.
- When Ned got attacked by the wolf in the bushes, his cries sounded feminine - possibly a reference to "Bart of Darkness", in which his girlish squeal was confused for Maude's.
- After transforming into a werewolf, Ned still says "Diddly" after growling.
- "Desperately Xeeking Xena" coined the term "A wizard did it".
Continuity
- After Homer makes Maude believe Ned had a heart attack, he says "And that's the end of that chapter" - the catchphrase of Homer Simpson on Police Cops in "Homer to the Max".
- Number 51 appears in the alien audience. ("Homer the Great")
- The new year's ball appeared again, though this time silver instead of yellow. ("The Trouble with Trillions")
DVD release
- The episode was released on The Simpsons.com with the "Itchy & Scratchy Land", "Das Bus" and "Homer Goes to College".
Goofs
- In real life, Ross Perot is left handed. However, in the episode he was seen holding a drink in his right hand, rather than his left.
- After Bart notices that the rocket they are on is heading to the Sun in "Life's a Glitch, Then You Die", a scene shows the respective rockets going to The Sun and Mars, which are next to one another. In reality, Mars is about 141,000,000 miles away from the Sun. In later scenes, they are shown further from one another, albeit still close together.
