Cultural references
- The title is a reference to the film about a boy and a stray dog Old Yeller, and to the term "yellowbelly", which means "coward".
- The episode's couch gag is a reference to the iconic photograph Lunch atop a Skyscraper by Charles Clyde Ebbets.
- Bart and Milhouse sing a modified version of the patriotic song "Battle Hymn of the Republic". In the lyrics, the American actor and country music singer Jimmy Dean is mentioned.
