Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a pun on the English nursery rhyme "Simple Simon".
- In the episode's couch gag the family in Batman-style costumes slides down separate poles and end up on the couch in the Batcave. The transition sound effect is heard as well.
- The American reality shows Temptation Island, Joe Millionaire and The Bachelor are parodied in Promiscuous Idiots Island, a TV program from Fox.
The "Golden Ticket" to visit Farmer Billy's Bacon Factory is a parody of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Homer tries to find a "Golden Ticket" so he can visit Farmer Billy's Bacon Factory. This is a reference to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in which the protagonist, Charlie Bucket, tries to get a Golden Ticket to visit the chocolate factory. Farmer Billy also wears a top hat like Willy Wonka.
- The Country singer at the Springfield County Fair bears a strong resemblance to Alan Jackson in both appearance and singing style.
- Actress Barbra Streisand and terrorist organization Al Qaeda are mentioned in the song "America (I Love This Country)".
- Lisa's dinner table setting is named "If Music Be the Food of Love", this is the opening line of Act 1 Scene 1 in William Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night.
- Lisa calls the Jell-O dessert "Ella Fitz Jell-O", a reference to American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald.
- Drederick Tatum mentions the formula for the area of the circle "Pi r^2".
- The comic books Comic Book Guy forced Bart to buy include:
- Richie Rich: Incorporates in Delaware, a reference to the Riche Rich comics. Delaware is also viewed as a positive location for corporate tax purposes because of favorable laws of incorporation.
- Supergirl vs. the Glass Ceiling: The comic features the DC Comics character Supergirl. A glass ceiling is a metaphor used to represent an invisible barrier that prevents a certain group of people (in this case, women) from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy.
- The Green Listener, a parody of the The Green Hornet.
The scene when Pie Man and Marge kiss in the rain is a parody of the famous kissing scene in the 2002 film Spider-Man
- The superhero plot, the scene where Homer creates his uniform and the upside-down kiss scene resemble Spider-Man.
- Milhouse complains when he was given the Fantastic Floor comic book instead of the Fantastic Four.
- Nichelle Nichols mentions William Shatner when she is at the The Android's Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop. Shatner is known for portraying Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek.
- One of the pies at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant cafeteria talks and laughs like Phyllis Diller.
- Lisa compares the Dalai Lama to Elvis Presley and the song "See See Rider" (covered by Elvis) is heard when the Dalai Lama enters the Springfield Town Hall.
- Homer calls the Dalai Lama "Talking Llama", a reference to The Emperor's New Groove.
Trivia[edit]
- All references to the Dalai Lama were edited out when it was broadcast in Asia. In some channels the Dalai Lama parts were replaced with Lisa, while other channels had the Dalai Lama parts just edited out, leaving the storyline "gaping" and "unfocused."
- Mr. Burns normally fails to recognize Homer when he sees him, but in this episode, he recognizes him right away when unmasking him.
Continuity[edit]
- When Homer is watching the bacon commercial at the beginning, and if you look closely, you can see Ralph Wiggum riding the conveyor belt with the pigs (which he thinks its "Bovine University" from "Lisa the Vegetarian").
Goofs[edit]
- When Homer examines his Pie Man costume in the mirror, the Pie/Lightning Bolt logo is not reflected.
- When The Rich Texan runs from the laughing crowd, Kent Brockman has Rainier Wolfcastle's colors.
