Cultural references[edit]
- Although the subtitle at the end refuses to admit it, the episode is a parody of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice rock opera Evita. The reason that they refuse it at the end is because Webber dislikes having his works parodied.
- The songs in the episode parody songs from Evita:
- "A Vote for a Winner" and "Smart Girl Six Three" are parodies of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina".
- "I Am Their Queen" is a parody of "Rainbow High".
- "Skinner's Evil Plan" is a parody of "Peron's Latest Flame" and "Rainbow Tour".
- "A Tango Takes Two" is a parody of "A Waltz for Eva and Che".
- Marge said that she played Candy Land with Maggie and threw vodka in her face.
- Martin said he got the idea of a casino night at the school from an episode of Saved by the Bell.
- After Homer wins on the wheel, he tells Marge that they'll get a PlayStation 1.
- When Homer is mocking Nelson, he jokes that Nelson drives a pink Miata.
- Nelson sung "I Am Iron Man", a parody of "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath.
- When Lisa walked into the teacher's lounge, Skinner told her they were just discussing Vasco da Gama.
- When Skinner gives Lisa a key to the school, Skinner says it's like she's Harry Potter without any of the wonder.
- Marge said that Lisa was like Geraldine Ferraro.
- The postage stamps Homer has feature Bugs Bunny from Looney Tunes and Elvis Presley.
- Chief Wiggum went to Olive Garden to eat with Mayor Quimby, who never turned up.

- Groundskeeper Willie is seen drowning in the pool, but in a later episode the pool was shown to have been removed a long time ago. ("Pranks and Greens")
- After the Willie mistake, we see the bus, and it says "Springfiled Elementary School".
- When the teachers are giving Lisa a makeover, Lisa's new bag is on her shoulder from above, but not from the side and front. Her bag disappears from existence within a second.
- When the camera pans over the student body, there are two Milhouses.
- In the student casino, Sarah Wiggum has ginger hair.
- When the teachers laugh at Willie imitating Milhouse, Allison Taylor has pink clothes and light brown hair.
