Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the "pura vida" style of life in Costa Rica.
- It's also a reference to the 1999 song "Livin' la Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin.
- Bart and Milhouse eat a jar of Nutella and watch Russian dashcam videos at the sleepover. Dashcams are widespread in Russia as a guard against police corruption and insurance fraud, where they provide additional evidence.
- Milhouse says "vodit' znachit ubivat'" which means "to drive is to kill" in Russian.
- The Lonely Island: Costa Rica is a reference to the comedy trio The Lonely Island and travel guide book publisher Lonely Planet.
- Instasnap is a parody of Instagram and Snapchat.
- According to Homer, Kirk Van Houten's job is to drive the "Topless Maids" van. This is a reference to a Los Angeles "topless maid" service that went viral on Ellen in late 2012.
- Kirk wants the waiter Rodrigo to put the bill in his Magnises card. Magnises was a card-based membership club.
- Homer and Evelyn watch a Cornhole game on ES3N, a parody of ESPN.
- Milhouse makes a LEGO spaceship that looks like a X-wing fighter.
- Lisa thinks she has found some stone spheres made by Diquis. The Diquis are known for stone spheres, sometimes referred to as the Diquís Spheres.
- Patty's full name is Patricia Maleficent Bouvier. A reference to the Disney villain.
