Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a reference to the novel, Gone, Baby, Gone, and the film adaptation of the same name.
- This episode has the second title that makes a reference to this novel and film adaption; the other is "Gone Maggie Gone" from Season 20.
- The episode's chalkboard gag "I will not concede the election till Karl Rove gives me permission" is a reference to the 2012 United States presidential election. On Election Night, broadcasted on Fox News, American Republican political consultant Karl Rove argued live that the network was wrong and that Republican candidate Mitt Romney had won Ohio even though they were ready to call it for Obama.
- The couch gag is a parody of the opening sequence of the cartoon show Wacky Races, with various Springfieldians parodying that shows' characters:
- Homer as Peter Perfect.
- Marge and Sarah Wiggum as Penelope Pitstop.
- Mr. Burns as antagonist Dick Dastardly.
- Cletus' team "Hick Dastardly" is also a reference to Dick Dastardly.

- Abe has taken the role of Muttley, the famous cartoon dog, when his laugh can be heard when he wins.
- The store Yuk-ingham Palace is a reference to Buckingham Palace.
- Lenny mentions having watched a Sesame Street episode when he is talking about banks with Homer. Lenny also mentions Kermit the frog.
- Moe mentions the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) when he convinced Homer to put his money in FlamingHotPoker.net.
- Homer mentions Discovery Channel's shark-based programming block, Shark Week, when he tries to remember what important date he missed.
- In Abe's US Army box a pin saying "Phoeey on Dewey" is seen. This is a reference to Republican Thomas E. Dewey, who lost against Harry S. Truman in the 1948 United States presidential election.
- When Abe goes missing, Homer reads a book titled The Wander Years: A Guide to Finding the Walking Dad for ideas on how to find him. The book's title is a pun on The Wonder Years and The Walking Dead.
- Homer is surprised when he finds out that Abe was an "aspiring songwriter like Charles Manson". American criminal Charles Manson was a singer-songwriter, and some of his works were covered by notable artists and bands.
- The poker books Lisa owns include:
- Al Roker on Poker, written by American author Al Roker.
- King of Queens and Full House, which has a note saying "not the crappy TV shows". This is a reference to the sitcom The King of Queens.
- American poker expert Jennifer Tilly appears along Chucky and makes a reference to Bride of Chucky, a film in which she starred.
- Lisa starts earning money playing poker while the "Ride of the Valkyries" from Richard Wagner's opera Die Walküre is heard. The university hoodies she wears include references to: University of Missouri (at Rolla), Mount Holyoke College, Cornell University, Harvard University (with a Yale University cap), University of Oxford (with a Sorbonne University scarf).
- The "Wedding March" is heard when Rita LaFleur marries Abe.
- Homer has a picture of Fonzie from the popular American sitcom Happy Days.
- The song heard at the airport bar is "Where Everybody Knows Your Name", the theme song of the sitcom Cheers.
- According to The Rich Texan, singer Kenny Rogers' most famous line was "This is a bad piece of chicken". Rogers was a co-founder of the restaurant chain Kenny Rogers Roasters in collaboration with former Kentucky Fried Chicken CEO John Y. Brown Jr.
- Bart mentions the film Seabiscuit when he tries to cheer Lisa up.
- Bart criticizes Sideshow Bob's restaurants on Yelp, the business reviews website.
