Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a reference to the Changing of the Guard.
- The board game Emissaries to Byzantium is a parody of Settlers of Catan. In the game, the players must gather resources to fund a syndicate to gain influence with the Doges of Venice.
- Bart thinks Lisa is talking about Twister, the game of physical skill.
- Homer prays that if dies in the tornado, he wants to be taken to Oz. However, he doesn't want Flanders to be the scarecrow. These are references to the magical country and the character from The Wizard of Oz, respectively.
- Carl shows Homer the article for "surface hoar" on Wiccapedia, a parody of Wikipedia.
- "Winter" from Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is heard when Marge imagines God's vacuum cleaner.
- The scene of the two people greeting while being on a rowing boat in a tornado is a parody of the "It's a Twister!" scene from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
- Ling plays Partita in A minor for solo flute by Johann Sebastian Bach on a transverse flute.
- Kirk Van Houten once saw a girl named Vicky in a Walgreens pharmacy store.
- Marge was scared when she found out Keith and his girlfriend were from the Mid-Atlantic as it was the place where the crime drama The Wire was filmed. More specifically, the series is set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland.
- Homer thought The Jackson 5 were the only perfect family before meeting Mav's cool grandfather.
- Portia has a BA at Princeton University and an MA at the University of Oxford. Portia turned down attending Rhodes College because she considered Cecil Rhodes a racist. Rhodes's views on race have been debated by critics who have labelled him as a supporter of apartheid and a white supremacist.
- Homer is going to look for Mav and Portia on Google.
- "Just the Two of Us" by Bill Withers is heard when Homer and Marge spend time together.
- Mav thinks the kids are more awesome than the breaks at Waimea, Hawaii. The surf break at Waimea Bay was significant in the development of Big wave surfing.

Trivia[edit]
- Ling Bouvier, who was previously seen as a baby, was seen to have aged a couple of years. This makes Ling one of the few characters on the show to have physically aged since the show began.
- This episode was censored in Oklahoma due to the 2013 Moore tornado.
Goofs[edit]
- When Santa's Little Helper is being blown away by the tornado, there are two errors:
- In one shot, the underneath of one of Santa's Little Helper's paws has been colored in wrong.
- When the dog is howling, the howling sounds do not match Santa's Little Helper's mouth's movements.
