- At Dylan's party, some kids are dressed as superheroes from Marvel and DC Comics.
- Battle Ball is a reference to Bakugan Battle Brawlers, a game played with balls with magnets inside and cards.
- When explaining the game to Bart, one of the boys says that it makes Digimon look like Pokémon.
- John Swartzwelder, one of The Simpsons writers, is seen among the bums that Chief Wiggum ordered Krusty to sort according to the war they participated in.
- Ralph's grandma lives in Tokyo, Japan.
- While pointing a gun at Homer, Johnny Tightlips says, "nobody moves, or the doughboy gets popped" a reference to Poppin' Fresh, better known as the Pillsbury Doughboy.
- Chief Wiggum wants Homer to write a story about baseball player Babe Ruth and Adolf Hitler, but without mentioning "baseball" or "Germany".
- When chief Wiggum goes to Moe's tavern upon leaving the hospital, it is revealed that he has tried to frame Homer with fake evidence such as in the police corruption film Touch of Evil. He is also using a cane like captain Quinlan did.
- He also compares the friends' meeting to a "St. Elmo's Fire reunion which Andrew McCarthy was going to attend". McCarthy was part of the cast of St. Elmo's Fire, a film about a group of friends who just graduated from college and struggled with adulthood.
- The cop show that Homer watches before changing the channel is a parody of the action TV series Starsky & Hutch.
- Over the freeze-frame at the end of the show, the words "A Stephen J. Copshow Production" appear, a parody of Stephen J. Cannell, who produced many cop shows but not Starsky & Hutch.
- Fat Tony, Louie, Legs and Johnny Tightlips are creating fake Lacoste shirts.
- When Wiggum holds a fried chicken as if it was a gun, Johnny Tightlips says "looks like his weapon is loaded with 12 original herbs and spices". This is a reference to KFC Original Recipe, in which Sanders' Original Recipe of "11 herbs and spices" is one of the most famous trade secrets in the catering industry.
- When Louie turns on the music for Fat Tony, the song "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian plays.
- The song is heard again during the credits.
- Wiggum uses Fix-a-Flat to attack Louie.
- At the end of the episode, one of Homer and Wiggum's photos is a parody of the skating scene from Blades of Glory, the sports comedy film.
