Cultural references

Opening sequence

• Homer asks himself if he should write in Judge Judy.
• 50 reasons not to vote Donald Trump are listed:

• Hans Moleman mentions voting for Kanye West.
• The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse appear.

Toy Gory

• The title and plot is a parody of Toy Story.
• In the scene where the toys drag Bart out of the house, the scene is a reference to Family Guy's television "We now return to" cutaways, and to Turner Classic Movies having little in their library besides art house garbage.
  • In the next scene, the Pixar lamp appears.
• Dr. Hibbert says "Don't ask, don't Mattel", a reference to the Mattel toys company.

Into the Homer-verse

• The title and plot is a parody of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
• Hansel and Gretel are seen in a room, captured by Mr. Burns and Smithers.
• Homer Barbera is a parody of Yogi Bear and a reference to Hannah-Barbera.
  • He calls Homer Boo-Boo, a reference to Boo-Boo Bear.
  • Homer mentions him sounding like Art Carney.
  • He then transforms into Green cat Homer, a parody of Snagglepuss and Huckleberry Hound.
  • He transforms then into Cowboy Homer is a parody of Quickdraw McGraw.
  • When Mr. Burns enter the room at the end, he runs in place like Scooby-Doo, sound effect included.
• Disney Princess Homer, including the crystal shoe and the pumpkin coach, is a parody of Cinderella, and his name is a reference to the Disney Princesses.
• Black and White Homer is a parody of Spider-Man Noir.
• 8-bit Homer is a parody of 8-bit characters from videogames.
  • In a cut scene, he jumps on a building game, which is the Donkey Kong arcade game. He moves and dies the same way Mario does in the game.
  • He says Three-eyed crow is a Tomegatroid, to which Homer asks what's a Megatroid, a reference to both the game series and enemy, Metroid, and the Metroid-style mobile game Megatroid.
• The 6 Homers sing the Lollipop song.
• 8-Bit Homer jumps on the kitchen table and hits the roof, dropping donuts, a reference to the way that Sonic the Hedgehog does with the rings he has collected when he's hit.
• Homer transforms himself into a Color by dots Homer, Astract art Homer, Spongebob Homer and then into Balloon Homer.
• Alternate Mr. Burns include:

Be Nine, Rewind

• It's a spoof of the 2008 comedy Be Kind Rewind.
• During the title card, "Gotta Get Up by Harry Nilsson plays.
• Films shown by Comic Book Guy are Groundhog Day, the fourth Star Trek movie, Knock-Knock Joke, and Edge of Tomorrow.
  • He also mentions Tom Cruise, Superman and Batman.
• It’s a parody references of the 2017 comedy-horror movie Happy Death Day.

Trivia

• This is the third time that The Simpsons is CGI-animated in a "Treehouse of Horror" segment. The first was in "Treehouse of Horror VI" and the second was in "Treehouse of Horror XXVIII".
• During the ending credits, a scene from every segment of every past episode of the "Treehouse of Horror series" is shown.
• This episode was screened virtually exclusively for 500 people who signed up on Decider on October 14, 2020, courtesy of Fox.

Continuity
