Cultural references[edit]
- The name of the episode is a reference to a Hail Mary pass in football.
- The Crazy Cat Lady was taking Reese's Pieces thinking they were psychoactive medication.
- Mario from the Mario series appears in this episode, where a disgruntled Homer fights with him due to his annoyance. The fight is a direct parody of the arcade game Donkey Kong, with Homer tossing garbage cans just like how Donkey Kong tossed barrels at Mario.
- Ned has a script for Citizen Kane.
- Flanders' violent films are an obvious parody of The Passion of the Christ.
- The sign at the Springfield Stadium says that tomorrow will be Simon vs. Garfunkel, a reference to Simon & Garfunkel.
- During the montage of Deion Overstreet performing obnoxious end zone dances, "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" by C+C Music Factory plays.
- Mr. Burns' company logo is a parody of the Columbia Pictures logo.

- Homer is called a "jerkass" by a sports commentator. This is a possible reference to "Jerkass Homer", which is what many internet fans called Homer during the Scully era (Seasons 9-12)
- Ned is dressed as the Devil in his film in the same way he appeared as the Devil in "Treehouse of Horror IV".
- Quarterback Tom Brady, who made a cameo in this episode, led the New England Patriots to victory in Super Bowl XXXIX, which aired immediately before this episode.
