Cultural references

• The title of the episode is a reference to the 1982 movie Fitzcarraldo.
  • In the movie, a steamship is pulled up a mountain; similarly, the Springfielders later pull Deuce's Caboose up a steep hill.
• The blackboard text makes reference to the various predictions the show has made on many things, like Super Bowl LI's Lady Gaga performance in Lisa Goes Gaga. In the text, Bart says Homer bet on Atlanta's win and he lost the bet. In the Super Bowl LI Atlanta lost to the New England Patriots.
• Dominoes pizza boxes are a reference to Domino's Pizza and its Simpsons commercial.
• Homer eats a box of Cracker Jack. The box references the disappointing prizes that can be found inside.
• Homer mentions Macy's, saying "It's like if Macy's didn't sell mace."
• Patty references James Bond and the movie Licence to Kill.
• Kentucky Steamed Chickpeas is a reference to Kentucky Fried Chicken.
• Tofu Bell is a reference to Taco Bell.
• The food chain Arby's is seen.
• Homer says "Chewie, we're home", referring to his mouth. He's quoting Han Solo from the Star Wars film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
• Homer imagines Bart as a Butterfinger bar, a reference to how Bart used to be star in its commercials.

Trivia

• In the Destination Springfield event of The Simpsons: Tapped Out, Krusty was asked by Quimby for Krusty Burger to help the city create a Japanese atmosphere by serving sushi. In the episode, the Krusty Burger now has Japanese corporate parents.

• One of the bodies thrown in the Christmas decorations box by Smithers is Smilin' Joe Fission. ("Homer's Odyssey")

Goofs

• On Hulu, when Skinner tells parents to pick up kids in South Springfield, the subtitles say Chinatown instead.
• When Krusty shows off his new menu items, he butchers the pronunciation of banh mi and pho.
• Homer and Deuce thought they were the same age, though Deuce as adult met Homer as child.
