Cultural references
- The title is a play on Billy Wilder's 1955 comedy The Seven Year Itch.
- The various prison scenes parody several different movies and TV shows, most notably Oz and Escape from Alcatraz.
- Marge refers to Fat Tony's son as Michael, a reference to the movie The Godfather. Michael would later be seen in series 18, in the episode "The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer".
- When arresting Homer, Chief Wiggum references the television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
- The tilted hat Homer wears in prison is inspired by Simon Adebisi's trademark hat from the Oz series
- When people start walking out of the concert hall after the first notes ("V for Victory") of the Beethoven 5th Symphony, Marge shouts "Wait! The next piece is an atonal medley by Philip Glass!" At which point, the audience begins running out, followed by the orchestra with their instruments.
- A theatre marquee in Shelbyville advertises "Sideshow Mel in Equus".
- Peanuts:
- An image of Snoopy is visible on the letter that Marge writes to Frank Gehry. We can see an image of Snoopy on the stationary she uses.
- Santa's Little Helper is seen flying a plane, very much like Snoopy's "Flying Ace" flights of fancy where he fights the Red Baron.
- Homer sleeps above a red dog house, like Snoopy usually does.
- Homer is seen trying to escape from the prisoners on a Segway PT.
- Frank Gehry is the first architect to appear on The Simpsons. There are several references to his unorthodox designs, as when Gehry crumples Marge's letter and throws it away, only to discover that it's the perfect design for Springfield's concert hall.
- As Frank Gehry goes through his incoming mail, he says "Bill, bill, Bilbao bill,..." referring to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao he designed for Bilbao, Spain.
- Frank Gehry's design of the Springfield concert hall is similar to his design of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
- When being asked to be the prison snitch, Homer asks if he will eat cheese and imitates Wallace from Wallace and Gromit.
- The snippet of music played by the orchestra in the gym is from the first movement of Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Frank Gehry is a huge Mahler fan (from his own words in Michael Tilson Thomas's "Keeping Score - Mahler: Origins and Legacy" DVD.)
- The Springfield orchestra is led by a conductor with a German accent who resembles the late German conductor Herbert Von Karajan.
- When Mr Burns is reading out the list of drugs one of them is "Blue Bomber," which is a nickname for the videogame character Mega Man. 10mm Valium tablets are also known as "Blue Bombers" (Oxymorphone).
- The names suggested by citizens to rename Springfield are "Lemur Peru" (a play on Lima Peru), "Gotham City", "Wiggumville" and "Burger King".
- When Mr. Burns says he is looking for "someone who can really point at genitalia" he is alluding to the infamous photo of Lynndie England doing just that to the prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
