Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a reference to Make Room for Daddy, the original name of The Danny Thomas Show, a sitcom that ran from 1953 to 1957.
- While sleeping at work, Homer is listening to a radio talking about things from 1939, mentioning the then-current president Franklin D. Roosevelt and Benny Goodman's version of "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)". Homer mentions he has to stop Adolf Hitler.
- To bring Homer back to the present, Lenny changes the radio to KBBL and the famous 1982 song "The Safety Dance" by new wave band Men Without Hats is heard. When the song finishes, Bill and Marty refer to the band as the "Men Without Jobs", a reference to "The Safety Dance" being their only real successful US single.
- Bill thinks that people at P. J. O'Harrigan's behave in a way that makes Animal House, the 1978 comedy film about a trouble-making fraternity, look like Terms of Endearment, a 1983 family tragicomedy film.
- At the bar, Homer won a prize called "Sir Drinks-A-Lot", a pun on rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot.
- Homer is excited to think they were going to see Marmaduke, the dog from the comic of the same name.
- Lisa proposed to visit the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, which includes both real and non-real-world exhibitions of the institute, including:
- The Mercury space capsule, Friendship 7.
- The Spirit of St. Louis plane.
- Sammy Davis, Jr.'s eye, which he lost in a car accident.
- The Liberty Bell
- Baseballer Lou Gehrig's jersey, with his now retired number four (4).
- The Star-Spangled Banner garrison flag.
- The Howdy Doody puppet.
- A 1911 High wheeler car.
- A Don't Tread on Me political slogan flag.
- A statue of Theodore Roosevelt riding a horse.
- Abraham Lincoln's top hat.
- Fonzie's jacket from Happy Days.
- The Bill of rights.
- Archie Bunker's chair from All in the Family.
- When Homer rolls on the sofa and says "that Andy Capp knew a lot" he imitates a habit of Andy, the slacker drunkard starring in a well-known 1970s comic strip Andy Capp drawn by Reg Smithe and published in the Daily Mirror.
- Lisa claims Homer taped over her video tape of The Little Mermaid, which is her favorite movie. Homer believes her favorite movie is The Odd Couple.
- Homer hums The Odd Couple theme song composed by Neal Hefti.
- La-Z-Mom is a pun on La-Z-Boy, an American furniture manufacturer.
- Homer compares Bart and Lisa to Frick and Frack comedic ice skating duo, Jack and Jill kids from the traditional English nursery rhyme and Fred and Ethel Mertz from the sitcom I Love Lucy.
- Homer and Lisa watch a TV show called When Animals Attack Magicians, a parody of When Animals Attack!.
- Homer mentions American comedian and actress Joan Rivers.
- While in the water tank, Homer sings "Witch Doctor" by Ross Bagdasarian.
- The owner girl from Karma-Ceuticals refers to the Chinese divination text, the 'I Ching.
- Lisa's hallucinations let her be a cat, a tree, and journalist Cokie Roberts.
Trivia[edit]
- A deleted scene had Marge listening in on a conversation between Helen Lovejoy and Luann Van Houten instead of Moe and Lenny. The gossip was also different, while the conversation between Moe and Lenny was about Groundskeeper Willie, Helen and Luann's conversation was about Marge and Jacques.
- This is second time Bart has a blue jacket. The first time was in "Itchy & Scratchy Land".
Goofs[edit]
- At one frame in the kitchen when Homer is holding Maggie, the walls and hinges of the kitchen are colored pink instead of light purple.
Continuity[edit]
- In the new age store, a Stonecutter logo can be seen.
