- The episode title is a spoof of novelty T-shirts saying "I'm with stupid."
- Apu says "it's payback time, and this time it's personal." This is a reference to the tagline of the fourth Jaws film, Jaws: The Revenge, "This time it's personal."
- Apu owns the album Concert Against Bangladesh, which features the song "You Make Me Feel So Young" by Frank Sinatra. The album's name is a reference to George Harrison's benefit concerts called The Concert for Bangladesh.
- Apu's prayer mentions "good Gandhi."
- Apu asks if anyone wants to play "Ganesh-Gnop," a parody of the game Gnip Gnop and a reference to the Hindu deity Ganesha.
- A copy of The Kama Sutra gets thrown out the window of Apu's apartment. Homer then reads it in the car.
- Apu taught a parrot to sing a parody of "I Love the Nightlife" by Alicia Bridges.
- Apu took Manjula to see the opera La bohème.
- Homer got a temporary tattoo of the Taco Bell dog.
- When the men see Apu's horse-drawn carriage pass Moe's Tavern, Moe says that he "has everything but the Shriners." Grampa, Jasper, and the Old Jewish man then drive past in tiny cars wearing Shriners hats.
- Chief Wiggum mentions that Tiffany's now offers breakfast, a reference to the film Breakfast at Tiffany's.
- When the men see the boat that they think Apu has bought, Chief Wiggum says "this is one love boat that won't delight and amuse," a reference to the TV series The Love Boat.
- Elton John's private plane has a pair of huge red glittering glasses, a reference to the singer's trademark sunglasses.
- Elton John gives Homer a Grammy Award. When "I'm with Cupid" aired, John had won four Grammy Awards.
- Elton John tells the men that when he was dubbed Sir Elton, the Queen paddled him silly.
- Sarah Wiggum thinks the star symbol next to the "I Heart U" writing means Poppin' Fresh, the advertising mascot for Pillsbury, and Clancy's nickname for her.
- Apu says "My humble message of love has become a Valentine's Day Massacre."
- After Apu saves Elton John from the plane gone awry, he references a number of Sir Elton's songs. They include "Take Me to the Pilot", "Your Song", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", and "The Bitch Is Back".
- Elton John performs a parody of "Your Song" for Apu and Manjula.
- The episode ends in a heart-shaped iris, à la Love, American Style.

- When Otto looks in the rear view mirror, Milhouse's hair is blond.
- In Moe's Tavern, Larry is seen sitting at the bar in one shot, but is seen standing next to Lenny in another shot. Meanwhile, Lenny is seen standing next to Carl, but is then seated at the bar between Barney and Sideshow Mel, when he was not there previously.
