Cultural references[edit]

Homer's hand does the same movement as that of Rose's in the famous "To The Stars" scene in Titanic
  • Homer placing his hand and sliding it down the glass of the popcorn machine parodies the famous "To The Stars" scene in the 1997 drama Titanic, where Rose (Kate Winslet) does exactly the same movement as Homer on the condensated window of a car.
  • Homer imagining people turning to apes and destroying everything is a reference to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
  • Moe says that the acronym "OK" stands for "Old Kinderhook", which was one of the nicknames for US president Martin Van Buren. Some historians believe that "OK" originated from Van Buren's supporters who used it to refer to him during his presidential campaigns. This connection to Van Buren is one of the popular theories about the etymology of the term "OK".
  • On Dr. Eugene Blatz's video:
    • One of the crisis is American economist Ben Bernanke. This is a reference to Bernanke being the chairman of the United States Federal Reserve during the 2007–2008 financial crisis.
    • Another crisis is the 17-year cicadas, a species of cicadas that emerge en masse every 17 years in North America.
  • The Confederate battle flag can be seen at the Springfield Preppers headquarters.
  • The apocalyptic films Homer and Bart are watching include:
  • MyTube is a parody of YouTube.
  • The acronym TEOTWAWKI Homer uses means "The End of the World as We Know It", and is a phrase used in survivalism.
  • Bart and Milhouse are playing Satan's Path, which is a parody of the board game from the film Jumanji.
  • Bart's girlfriend was just a rice bag with a face drawn on it. This is similar to Wilson the volleyball, the personified friend of Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) in Cast Away.
  • Homer mentions watching a VHS version of the 1984 American action drama film Red Dawn.
  • The brain-eating zombies that are coming to Earth on an asteroid are a reference to the ones in the 1985 American comedy horror film The Return of the Living Dead.

Trivia[edit]

Continuity[edit]

Goofs[edit]

The goof
  • In one scene, L.T. Smash had brown hair instead of blond. Immediately after, when Gary Chalmers is looking through the rifle scope, Smash has blond hair again.
  • When Bart and Milhouse were seen playing Satan's Path, Bart's shoes are completely blue, like in Season 1 episodes.
