- In Bart's daydream, Pikachu from Pokémon and Bender from Futurama can be seen.
- On the field trip memorial wall when Willie has to enter Bart and Lisa's names, two of the names on the wall are El Jefe (Hefe) and Fat Mike - horns/guitar/backup vocals and bass/lead vocals/founding member (respectively) of the punk band NOFX.
- In Bart's daydream, the characters sing the classic Jewish folk song Hava Nagila.
- The scene of the connection of the TV to the satellite and of the monkeys working in the spaceship takes place with the musical piece An der schönen blauen Donau by Johann Strauss II, is a quote from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

- Bart says that when he gets through with Lisa's flag, "it's gonna be a Bart-mangled banner." "Bart-Mangled Banner" became the title of a later episode.
- The DVS narrator is different in this episode only.
- A common misconception about this episode is that Bart fails the third grade, something impossible for 4th grade students like Bart.
- Bart's fanny pack says "Lisa's Brother" and Lisa's says "Bart's Sister."
- Bart knows the states of Canada, but does not know the capital
- The State Flag of Capital City is very similar to that of the US state Arizona.
Goofs
The Capital City Goofball's appearance
- For some reason, the Capital City Goofball is orange in this episode, when in others, he is yellow.
- Bart and Lisa's fanny packs disappear as soon as they get on the bus.
- When we first see Willie standing by the Black Wall of field trips, the latest entry at at Willie's eye level. But when the angle changes, there are a lot more names on the wall, making the last entry appear just by Willie's chest.
- When Bart and Lisa tumble into the creek, you can tell it's pretty deep from the underwater shot of them choking each other. But when they resurface they're able to stand and the water's only waist deep.
- After Lisa is given her paper, you can clearly see that there is a B+ on top of the stack of the papers the teacher is holding. But a moment later, she gives Bart an A.
- When Bart starts to imagine his classmates as TV characters, Richard is on Bart's left and turns into Bender then he is almost instantly on Bart's right and becomes one of the cast from "Japanese Friends".
- When the kids are boarding the bus to Capital City and Otto says "Pukers in back", you can see him through the bus windshield but his mouth does not move.
