- The opening sequence, "Simcraft", is a reference to the video game Minecraft. The title screen is the same as the one in the game and Moe is a Creeper.

- Moe's evil smile and the rat with an antler tied to its head parodies the 1966 TV special How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
- The rhyme Skinner says when chasing Bart "Skate, skate as fast as you can. But I'll catch you, I'm the principal man", is a reference to The Gingerbread Man fairy tale. In some retellings, the Gingerbread Man taunts his pursuers with the famous line: "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!".
- At the Body Shop, Raphael quotes "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go". This phrase is attributed to Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, although no source in Wilde's writings has been found.
- Snake's son, Jeremy Jailbird, plays the butcher in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.
- Lucas Bortner has a T-shirt with a picture of Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi. Lucas also refers to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest when he says that the current record is 69. On July 4, 2011, Kobayashi finished 69 hot dogs, one more than the officially recognized world record at the time.

- The PlayStadium 4 is a parody of PlayStation 4.
- When Marge tells Homer he could not be a competitive eater due to his past heart disease, Homer is confident he can still do it and compares himself to baseballer Jackie Robinson, who broke the baseball color line in 1945 when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Homer also compares Marge to Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman. During a game in 1947, Chapman called Robinson a "nigger" from their dugout and yelled that he should "go back to the cotton fields".
- Patty calls Lucas "Justin Blobber", in a pun on Justin Bieber.
- The scene where Homer is sleepwalking is a reference to Bizkit, the sleepwalking dog. A video of this dog went viral in 2009. Homer does exactly the same movements, including hitting his head on the wall.
- The Thieving Magpie opera by Gioachino Rossini is heard when Bart gets all kinds of stolen items.
- The sequence of the two animals on the road parodies Looney Tunes' Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner.
