- The episode name is a reference to the phrase "down in the dumps".
- The episode's couch gag was made by American animator Don Hertzfeldt, with the style of Rejected, a surreal humor film.
- Krusty's housekeeper Helga is a parody of the hard-nosed Hungarian housekeeper Hanna played by Lynn Redgrave in the movie Gods and Monsters.
- The Comedy Cable Channel Roast of Krusty the Clown is a reference to Comedy Central Roast.
- The host Jeff Ross makes fun of Krusty by saying that "Krusty the Clown is to comedy what Martin Luther King is to comedy".
- Actress Sarah Silverman makes fun of Krusty as well.
- American stand-up comedian Carrot Top makes a non-speaking appearance at the show. He can also be seen at Hyman Krustofsky's funeral.
