"Girl's in the Band" is the nineteenth episode of broadcast season 30 of The Simpsons and the six hundred fifty-eighth episode overall. It originally aired on March 31, 2019. The episode was written by Nancy Cartwright and directed by Jennifer Moeller. It guest stars Dave Matthews as Lloyd, and J. K. Simmons as Victor Kleskow.

Synopsis[edit]

Lisa is scouted by the director of the Capitol City Philharmonic, to her band teacher's dismay. Meanwhile, Homer works extra shifts at the Power Plant so Lisa can play, putting strain on the family.

Plot[edit]

A panoramic view of Springfield is shown, with a billboard reading Welcome to Springfield. Come for Whacking Day, stay for the snake chowder and a message carved into the cornfield near Cletus's farm that says Corn likker sold here. The shot zooms in on the Springfield Academy of Music, where the class of 1999 is graduating. Dewey Largo is one of the recipients of the Golden Baton Award, but when the university president tells Gustavo Dudamel, the other recipient, that he'll only become a school teacher, Dudamel strangles Largo with dark energy.

Largo then wakes up from the nightmare next to his partner. After seeing Jimbo, Kearney, and Dolph uncover a manhole—allowing Sideshow Bob to escape—his usual morning routine with his partner and dog is shown. At Springfield Elementary School, Largo is teaching music when he receives an email from Victor Kleskow, the musical director of the Capital City Philharmonic, informing him that he will be attending Largo's concert the following night. Largo begins rehearsing with the students, using The Stars and Stripes Forever.

The concert is a success, but Largo is disappointed when Victor selects Lisa as the talent to take with him. Homer and Marge struggle to find a way to make it work financially, with Homer even offering to sell his Breaking Bad box set. When they arrive in Capital City, Lisa quickly realizes how intense Victor is when she sees the poor condition of the other students and his explosive anger over even minor mistakes.

To cover the costs, Homer starts working a night shift. Bart is confined to a closet with the siblings of the other musicians. Lisa wins first chair for saxophone in a competition against another student but begins to recognize how selfish she's become in pursuing this path at the expense of her family.

Victor offers Lisa a chance to advance to the next level, for ages 9 to 14, which is more expensive and located farther away. During his shift, Homer starts hallucinating, dancing and drinking with the bartender Lloyd. To avoid more financial pressure, Homer dismisses Maggie's musical talents, while Lisa intentionally fails her audition, sacrificing her future to preserve the family's well-being.

In the end, Largo returns home and initially kicks out his partner, but they reconcile after agreeing on the dog's name.
