Synopsis[edit]
- Homer's enthusiasm skills land him a job at a secretive company with a mind-altering agenda.
Plot[edit]
Ten years ago, Homer has just gotten his job as safety inspector. Mr. Burns warns him to never press the emergency shut down button unless there's an emergency, but he excitedly keeps doing it. In the present, Homer is eating pizza at his workstation, and an alarm rings, but he's too lazy to move and calls Lenny to press it. At home, the kids are excited to go on a field trip to the state park, while Homer keeps complaining that he didn't want to go when he proposed it.
They arrive at a waterfall, where the kids get excited about the stamp station. Homer keeps complaining that weekends are for relaxing, and the sign at the site calls the place "Serenity Peak - Tranquility Grove". Afterwards, at the Bootlegger's Hideout, Marge tries to explain the story of the place, but they're only interested in the stamp station, while Homer is looking at his phone. The kids eventually fill the stamps and go to the Visitors Center, where they get their Wilderness Explorer Completion Trophies.
At the gift shop, the kids ask for a souvenir, while Homer complains more, but Marge tells him to fake enthusiasm for the children, for parenting. He grabs a stress ball and fakes enthusiasm as suggested, and he convinces them, and the other people at the shop, to get them, and gets noticed by a shady guy. The guy later presents himself at home and is none other than Duffman; however, the Duff Corporation has retired the character, and now the way to market a product is undercover, just like Homer did in the gift shop.
He offers him a job at EOD, Enthusiasm on Demand, stealth advertising for the modern consumer. On the streets, he gets delivered a package from EOD containing a self-balancing unicycle, which he has to convince people to buy. At a mine shaft, some miners are trapped, as reported by Kent Brockman. Homer arrives, bringing happiness to the people gathered at the event. At the office, the CEO, Consonance, conveys that he's the key to completing Project Dark Contrivance. However, instead of not neglecting his old job, Homer quits it.
The next task is to sell UnDuff Nothin', non-alcoholic beer, to people. At Barney's Bowlarama, he tries to sell it to his friends; however, he couldn't go through with it. As a result, Consonance calls Homer into her office and has him go through the seperance procedure, a surgical operation on his brain separating him from the tastes and desires that make him what he is. He becomes the team leader of a Number A department.
Their next assignment is selling payday loans. Marge is not liking that he is spending so much time working and has become a zombie around the house. She arrives at the building, confronting Consonance, who offers Marge a job so she can spend more time with Homer. Marge goes through the seperance procedure too, and they start working together. As soon as they get home, Bart and Lisa notice that their parents are acting like zombies.
Afterwards, they go to the building to confront Consonance and receive the help of Duffman, who recently quit working for them and went through de-seperance. They sneak in through a back door, and despite the alarm being activated, they arrive at her office. She takes the kids to see Homer and Marge, and Consonance makes the statue of the founder talk, revealing that the only thing the company was doing was trying to make money. In the end, they ask what happened to their parents, and she reveals that the seperance procedure was just minor cosmetic surgery to make the employees more attractive salespeople, and that the only reason they become like zombies is what work does to them, draining their energy.
Bart and Lisa tell them they need their parents, and Marge agrees to find a work-life balance by quitting the job. At home, Bart accomplishes becoming a yellow belt in karate, while Lisa accomplishes making popsicle stick puppets. Homer and Marge show their love for their accomplishments, but Bart wonders if they were faking it, with Lisa saying she doesn't care. On the couch, Homer and Marge are still drained of their energy by parenting.
