Cultural references[edit]
- In the episode's title screen gag, the Space Shuttle appears with the phrase "For Sale $1", referencing its retirement that finished in July 2011, six months before this episode was aired.
- During the episode's couch gag, the Simpsons parody different American sitcoms in the order they were originally aired:
- The Honeymooners, with Homer as the bus driver Ralph Kramden, Bart as Ed Norton, Lisa as Trixie Norton and Marge as Alice Kramden.
- The Dick Van Dyke Show, with Homer as Rob Petrie, Marge as Laura Petrie, Bart as Buddy Sorrell and Lisa as Sally Rogers. The family parodies the opening of the sitcom, including Van Dyke's famous stumble.
- The Brady Bunch, with the Simpsons as the Bradys. Lisa gets hit in the nose by a football, a reference to one of the sitcom's most iconic scenes in which Marcia Brady gets hit by a football and eventually loses a date with a boy.
- Cheers, with Lisa as Carla Tortelli, Marge as Diane Chambers, Homer as Norm Peterson, Bart as Woody Boyd and Maggie as Cliff Clavin.
- At Moe's Tavern, the people from Springfield recreate parts of the music video of Lionel Richie's famous 1983 hit "All Night Long (All Night)", including the appearance of Richie himself and Lou taking the role of the policeman.
- Homer is seen dancing on the wall and then on the ceiling, a reference to "Dancing on the Ceiling", another song by Lionel Richie.
- Moe mentions having become friends with Pepto-Bismol, the name of a medication, on Facebook.
- Lisa mentions that Milhouse wears a Finding Nemo back brace.
- Homeur had to live to fight in Flanders, a region in northern Europe.
- A sponge sarcastically tells the rag that he was the Gutenberg Bible, the earliest major book printed in Europe.
- Medieval Chief Wiggum "submits" the moment Ralph hitted him to France's Funniest Cave Paintings, a pun on America's Funniest Home Videos.
- The collection of rocks Milhouse owns includes pyrite, quartzite, turquoise, unakite and amethyst
- The Wriggles CD that Milhouse owns is a parody of The Wiggles, an Australian children's music group.
- According to Bart, he converted Milhouse from a puppet to a real boy, similar to the story of Pinocchio.
- Luann refuses to get the Heimlich maneuver performed by Kirk on her.
- During the "King of Persia" portion of the episode, the Scheherazade, portrayed by Lisa, is costumed as Jeannie from the American fantasy sitcom I Dream of Jeannie.
- The Scheherazade tells Nelson the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. She also mentions Ali Baba's brother Cassim.
- Michelangelo is painting The Creation of Adam, which forms part of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling.
- He mentions Raphael, the Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance.
- "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" from the It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown soundtrack is heard when Moe hugs his rag.
- When the rag is converted to the Flags of the Confederate States of America the song "Dixie" is heard.
- The rag was part of an expedition to Mount Everest.
- Chief Wiggum thought he had found a Pringles tube of chips in the police car.
- The rag compares itself to a common Kleenex tissue.
- The plot of the episode is somewhat similar to the plot of The Red Violin.
Continuity[edit]
- In the scene where Marge comes up from the basement with laundry, the basement is in the wrong place and is under the stairs where a closet should be.
- Oil and beer have been poured on the bar, but when Moe throws his rag onto the bar, the oil and beer have disappeared.
- When Moe throws the bar rag out the window, there is a shot of the back of the family (with Moe and Milhouse) walking away from the window. Milhouse has his normal clothes on, despite entering the Simpson House with his pajamas still on.
- There is one shot of the Van Houten House in this episode which is different to the design of the house in other shots.
