Cultural references

• The episode's name is a reference to the Cole Porter song "At Long Last Love" and the film with the same name.
• As the family drive away from Springfield following their banishment, Lisa reads a book titled What to Expect When You're Ejected, a pun on the pregnancy guide What to Expect When You're Expecting.
• Mad Max: The babies saying "Two babies enter, one baby leaves" is a reference to the quote from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, "Two men enter, one man leaves".
• The arcade game Pong '95 is seen in Barney's Bowlarama, a reference to Pong.
• The arcade game Grand Theft Walrus, a parody of Grand Theft Auto, is also seen.
• Homer finds a Braniff International Airways jet engine and attaches it to a quadbike.
• The WikiLeaks headquarters is revealed to be in The Outlands. In real life, WikiLeaks has no official headquarters.

Trivia

• A parody of the opening sequence occurs after the Simpsons move to The Outlands:
  • "THE OUTLANDS" appears on the title screen, with the words sung in a stereotypical redneck accent accompanied by a fiddle.
  • The camera zooms in, panning over The Outlands. "THE OUTLANDS / Population: None of Your Damn Business!" is spray-painted on a wooden water tower.
  • Inside an abandoned building that resembles Springfield Elementary School, Bart spray-paints "I ♥ the breakdown of society" on the wall, then rides a motorcycle through the wall.
  • Bart takes a jump off the front steps and lands on a drunk holding a jug of moonshine, in the same place where Barney would be on the sidewalk.
  • Homer pulls up to the house on an ATV. Bart on his motorcycle takes another jump and bounces off the back of Homer's ATV.
  • Lisa and Maggie land next to the driveway in a homemade ultralight helicopter, narrowly missing Homer (and eliciting a "D'oh!" from him) as he gets off his ATV.

• Louie's hair is light brown in one scene.
• Raphael's seat in the town hall changes from one side of the room to the other.
• Several coloring mistakes occur:
  • When the Simpsons enter town hall, the Squeaky-Voiced Teen has Principal Skinner's colors.
  • When the police aim their guns at Marge and Homer, Mayor Quimby has Sanjay's colors.
  • In the panning shot of houses being built in the outlands, Kent Brockman has Rainier Wolfcastle's colors.
  • When the Simpsons are driving out of town, in one scene, Lisa's necklace is red, later, Bart's shirt is blue.
  • When the Simpsons are forced out of town on a float, Lisa's left eye turns yellow as the camera pans to Homer.
