- The title is possibly either a reference to either of three:
- Jon Vitti, who used the pseudonym, Penny Wise, several times.
- Pennywise, a punk rock band.
- Pennywise, a monster in Stephen King's It.
- The term wiseguy also refers to a fully initiated member of the Mafia.
- The chalkboard gag is a reference to people in various states starting petitions about their states' seceding from the USA, in protest of the results of the 2012 presidential elections.
- Dr. Hibbert mentions Justin Bieber.
- Otto mentions "Bridge to Terabithia" which is a reference to a novel and movie of the same name.
- The organ music that plays during the courtroom scenes is from the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 by Johann Sebastian Bach.
- The music that plays during the insectivores' meal is The Flower Duet from the opera Lakme by Leo Delibes.
- The music that plays over the beginning of the closing credits is from Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt.
