Cultural references

  • Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould: The episode's title is a play on that of the 1993 film.
  • The episode has a number of major references to Quentin Tarantino's film, Pulp Fiction:
    • Like Pulp Fiction, the episode's plot is episodic and interconnected.
    • The whole of the Chief Wiggum, Snake and Herman plot is based on the "Gold Watch" segment of the film. Numerous shots are almost identical to the film such as when Snake hits Wiggum with his car and when Herman points his gun at them both.
    • Wiggum, Lou and Eddie's conversation about the difference between Krusty Burger and McDonald's parallels the famous "Royale With Cheese" discussion between Vince Vega and Jules Winnfield over the difference between McDonald's in Europe and the USA.
  • 1999: Apu's line "I'm going to party like it was on sale for $19.99!" references Prince's song.
  • Freak-A-Zoid: Apu sings the song by Midnight Star.
  • E.R.: Dr. Nick's scenes parody the popular medical series.
  • Bazooka Joe: When people are giving suggestions to Lisa, Lionel Hutz suggests that Lisa keep the gum in as evidence, as Bazooka Joe has deep pockets.

Goofs

  • Smithers suffers severe allergic reactions to the bee sting in this episode, yet in "Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk" he was stung by several bees but suffered no problems at all.
    • Lisa said they were horseflies, so it must be that Smithers is actually allergic to horsefly bites and just generalized it by saying "bee".
  • Despite having returned to the house on a date with Agnes Skinner in "Bart the Fink", in this episode Chalmers apparently required directions to Skinner's house as if he'd never been there before.
  • In "Bart Gets Famous", Bumblebee Man was revealed to have a fake Spanish accent and actually spoke with an upper class British accent, yet now he speaks Spanish all the time. This was a deliberate change as the writer's felt the revelation that he was English was a terrible joke.
  • The Spanish used by Bumblebee Man is completely inaccurate. This was also done deliberately, to make sure that everyone could understand what he was saying without subtitles.
  • Bumblebee Man hangs his costume up on a door. When his wife walks through the door she walks behind the costume.
  • Chief Wiggum loses his hat in the fight with Snake, but in the next chapter of his story he is wearing it again.
  • Jasper supposedly got a nose job but he's seen with his regular nose later on.
  • An animation glitch occurs when Apu grabs the tofu dog; for one frame, a part of his head is pushed downward.
  • One of Lisa's hair spikes was split in one shot but in the next shot looks normal again.
  • Dr. Riviera leaves the door open, but when he defends the charge of misuse of cadavers, the door is closed.

Trivia

  • The episode does not actually feature twenty-two stories, but the according to the DVD commentary, the title was decided from the start, regardless of how many stories would actually end up in the episode.
  • Bumblebee Man's work day was of the following:
    • Disguising himself as a Pine Tree at a beach (implied to be a female-only nude beach), only for a woodpecker to rap at his head.
    • Eating Spaghetti and Meatballs at an Italian restaurant (or at least, implied to be an Italian restaurant), only for the waiter to tie part of the spaghetti dish around an electric socket, electrocuting Bumblebee Man.
    • Playing Baseball with him as one of the inning defense, and attempts to catch the ball, only for the "baseball" to reveal

itself to be a base-boulder and mow him down.
