  • After being humiliated at school, Bart proposes to put Grampa in a place where he could not get out. Lisa disagrees and says that old people must be respected, giving the example of Jacques Cousteau and Goldie Hawn. At the same time, Homer disagrees with Lisa and says that old people have too many benefits, mentioning Social Security, bus discounts, MedicAlert jewelry, Gold Bond powder and "pants all the way up to their armpits".

  • In Abe's story of the Flying Hellfish, Burns only held the rank of private because he was demoted for obstructing a probe from J. Edgar Hoover.

    • When Abe is about to shoot, he says "Now they'll never save your brain, Hitler", a reference to the 1968 film They Saved Hitler's Brain.
  • According to Abe, one of his photos in the US Army was published on Stars and Stripes, the daily American military newspaper.
  • The Flying Hellfish raid on the castle recalls the attack on the chateau in the The Dirty Dozen.

  • When Milhouse's grandfather announces that he has driven his house to the school, the topmost two buttons on his shirt disappear.
  • During Grandparents' Day, as Mrs. Krabappel invites Grampa to speak, he is holding his oatmeal spoon in his left hand. Before and after, he's holding it in his right. When Grampa starts to sit at Mrs. Krabappel's desk, and during his nonsensical stories, the spoon has vanished.
