Cultural references[edit]
- The episode is a reference to the American music festival Lollapalooza.
- The early working title "Homer Simpson in: Let Your Freak Flag Fly!" is in homage to an old saying that means embracing and expressing your unique personality without fear of judgment, celebrating individuality and nonconformity.
- The radio announcer mentions ABBA and Led Zeppelin.
- In the car, the radio plays "Shinin' On" by Grand Funk Railroad and "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain.
- Homer mentions the bands Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, The Alan Parsons Project and Hovercraft.
- At Suicide Notes music shop Homer finds a Styx album at the "Oldies" section. He was surprised to find it there as he had just listened to them on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a former American radio show. The album Boston by the band of the same name is also seen at Suicide Notes' "Oldies" section.
- Homer critiziced bands that were unknown to him, such as Sonic Youth and Nine Inch Nails.
- When teenage Homer approaches the van with cool kids, "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group plays.

- In the crowd scene at Hullabalooza, one of the teenagers has a picture of Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes on his t-shirt.

Continuity[edit]
- At Hullapalooza, One of the audience members has orange peace signs on their pants. One of the holes in a peace sign repeatedly is filled in.
- After dodging the cannonball, Homer is wearing a helmet, goggles, blue shorts and tennis shoes, but when he steps off the stage, the helmet and goggles disappear and he is wearing his blue flannel pants and his gray shoes.
