Pygmoelian/References

Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a pun on Pygmalion from Greek mythology.
- The Alco-Hall of Fame at Duff Days including an Audio-Animatronic of Ulysses S. Grant is a reference to his drinking, which was often exaggerated by the press and falsely stereotyped by many of his rivals and critics. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Grant's reputation was damaged by the "Lost Cause" movement and the Dunning School.
- When Duffman comes on stage, "Oh Yeah" by Yello plays.
- Duffman says that trick beer pouring qualifies as course credit at Dartmouth College.
- The song playing over the trick beer pouring contest is "Hippy Hippy Shake" by The Georgia Satellites, which is similar to a scene in the movie Cocktail.
- Moe sings a sample of the song "Silver Bells" by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans when he's on the operating table.
- In a flashback scene, Moe as a young man auditions for the role of Tad Winslow on It Never Ends, but is rejected by producer Helen Morehouse for being too ugly. Morehouse explains to a colleague, "I want Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island ugly, not Cornelius on The Planet of the Apes ugly."
- The announcement on It Never Ends is a parody of the opening announcement of Days of Our Lives.
- The opening credits of It Never Ends are a parody of the opening credits of The Young and the Restless.
- Homer appearing as an angel on It Never Ends is a reference to Jackie Gleason's appearance as the Chef of the Future in the episode of The Honeymooners "Better Living Through TV".
- Helen Morehouse allows Homer and Moe to change the soap opera on live TV, just like at the end of Tootsie.
- The "flying bicycles" Lisa hopes Bart has, which are needed to retrieve the pink elephant balloon, reference Steven Spielberg's movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Continuity[edit]
- When the children line up to go on the drunk simulator, Lewis has Wendell's colors.
- After Homer puts in the cassette tape, a fifth toe briefly appears on Lisa's right foot.
- Only Marge, Skinner, and Apu are in the "Duff Designated Drivers' Rockin' Fun Zone" in the first scene. In the next scene, the zone is much bigger, and there is also Kirk inside of it.
