- The opening scene at Mt. Sinai parodies the scene of Moses (portrayed by Charlton Heston) presenting the Ten Commandments in the 1956 American epic religious drama film The Ten Commandments.
- Homer is almost run over by the cable guy's truck. This sequence is a parody of the iconic crop duster scene from the 1959 American spy thriller film North by Northwest. While being attacked by an airplane, protagonist Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) tried to seek help from a truck that was passing by. The truck driver was barely able to stop before killing Thornhill, who stood in the middle of the road, in the same way Homer did to stop the cable guy.

- Lisa and Homer are watching Lucha libre, the term refers to the style of professional wrestling that originated in Mexico.
