Cultural references[edit]
- America's Most Wanted - America's Most Armed and Dangerous is a parody of the show.
- The Smurfs and The Care Bears - The Happy Little Elves is most likely a parody of the two shows.
- When Homer says "No, I said Samson, not Simpson.". This is a parody of a poem which ends in My name is Simpson, not Samson..
- The title could be a reference to the song of the same name.
The basement is replaced with a room?
- Dr. Monroe says to Marge "I'm as sure as my voice is annoying.". This is a joke on the fact Harry Shearer, the voice for Dr. Monroe, found the character annoying to voice.
- This episode was the first to be produced, yet last to air in the first season.
- Marge is called Marjorie for the first time.
- A lipstick stain is seen on the inside of the front door when Homer and Marge leave for their night out. This is from the original version of the show where Marge tries to kiss Homer as he leaves for work, but he slams the door in her face, making her smooch the door instead of drinking her coffee.
- Marge's bowling ball from the episode "Life on the Fast Lane" can be seen.
- After Homer shaves, his five o'clock shadow returns about six or seven seconds later.
- For some strange reason, the basement is found underneath the stairs leading to the first floor of the house in this episode, as Bart tries to make an escape from Botz by opening a door underneath the stairs and running down the steps. Also, the regular door leading to the basement in the corridor leading to the garage is instead replaced with a room.
- By the end of season 1, there is a total of 74 characters on the show.
- Screen cards at Marvin Monroe's radio show read: "Line 1: Marge, 31, Another Unappreciated Housewife" and "Line 2: Paul Hsi, 41, Nail Biter (not his own)."
- Bart has a Krusty the Clown lunchbox.
- Lisa has a Happy Little Elves lunchbox.
- Bart and Lisa watch The Happy Little Elves Meet the Curious Bear Cub video, rated GGG.
- Maggie falls down 19 times in this episode.
- The subtitle under Homer's picture in the news: "Homer Simpson, Local Boob".
- Santa's Little Helper does not appear in the episode, as his first appearance is in "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" as the episode had been postponed due to production difficulties.
- Homer being a big fan of mambo music was inspired by creator Matt Groening's own father Homer Groening being a mambo fan.
- The shade of red on Homer's tie goes lighter throughout the episode.
- The donut box in the breakfast scene has two colored donuts on the top. In the next scene when the milk is moved, the donuts are not colored and the box turns a darker white.
- At the beginning of the episode, Homer has green gloop on his plate. When he is about to eat the donut, the green gloop is gone. And when Homer eats the donut, the green gloop appears on Homer's plate. Also, the inside of Homer's donut is exactly the same color as the green gloop. Also in the next scene with Homer, the pile of green gloop is bigger. Also in the next scene with Homer, a pile of green gloop disappears and leaves a smaller, darker shade of green gloop. Finally, in an overhead shot of the table, Homer's leftover food has changed places.
- There is a space on the Nuclear Power Plant sign. In other episodes in Season 1, the space is took with "Welcome to".
- When Marvin Monroe puts his donut on the table, and moves it to the right, the crumbs move along with it.
- In one scene in Moe's Tavern, the top of the jar of picked eggs has disappeared.
- When Homer enters Howard's Flowers, the outside of the door is the color of the road and does not show a pavement. This "road background" is also present when the shot of Ms. Botz with her suitcases is seen.
- The grandfather clock in the hallway of the Simpsons' house reads about 8:40 in the first scene. After the shot of the Simpson house, the clock now reads about 8:30. When Marge's thoughts come into shot, the clock then reads about 6:50. Also, in that scene the pendulum in the grandfather clock has disappeared. However, the sound continues. After the thoughts disappear, the clock reads about 6:40 and the pendulum has reappeared. Also, there is no doorway leading to the basement, whereas in a later scene there is.
- When Marge says "Oh, Homer", there is now a door leading under the stairs to the basement. When the frame with Homer comes into view, Homer is dripping wet and was not before.
- In the bedroom when Marge (with her curlers in her hair) looks at Lisa, her face is off-model and her eyes are too close together.
- In the bathroom, Homer starts rubbing shaving cream onto his stubble, and suddenly the other side is covered with shaving cream as well.
- When Bart opens the door to Ms. Botz, there is no lipstick on the door. When Homer and Marge leave, there is clearly a lip mark. This was most likely left in from the original workprint, as in the workprint, Marge ends up kissing the door when Homer completely ignored Marge puckering up her lips. In the next scene, there is no lip mark (this could be out of shot)
- When the frame of Bart, Lisa and Maggie looking up at Marge and Ms. Botz is seen, the background is pink and lilac. There is also a red and white background when Bart says "Oh, the elves! The elves!"
- When Marge hands over the Happy Little Elves tape, the sleeve is not ripped. However, in the next shot, the bottom of the sleeve IS ripped. Also, when Ms. Botz prods Bart with the tape, the sleeve is not ripped. Also, the characters on the sleeve are yellow.
- When Marge kisses Bart on the cheek, there is no door leading to the basement behind him.
- The wall after the fireplace leading to the arch into the family room is out of proportion.
- Bart enters the Happy Little Elves tape into the player with the sleeve intact.
- When Bart walks over to the TV, the floor is a lighter blue than before and the walls and floor are gradient. This is most likely unedited footage from the original workprint. Also, when the shot of Bart near the TV is seen, a rug has appeared on the floor.
- In the scene where the two kids are on TV, a curtain has appeared above the TV.
The right lamp's pole is missing.
- When Bart and Lisa are cluched onto the side of the couch, there is a lamp shade next to them, flying in the air. This goof was probably caused by the TV antennae being so close to the bottom of the lamp shade. However, it seems to be a recurring error in the scene, as after a pan to the TV, the error is still persistant when it pans to Bart and Lisa on the couch.
- When Ms. Botz enters with a rope, she seems to be coming from the living room, which is on the other side of the family room.
- In the overhead shot of Homer's car driving past the Off-Ramp Inn, the car is purple. When the car passes the Next Exit sign, the car is pink.
- When Ms. Botz is rummaging out the stuff from Homer and Marge's bedroom, there is no arch leading to the bathroom.
- Maggie goes out of her bedroom, into Homer and Marge's bedroom, and goes to the right of the screen. Then, she comes out of exactly the same door she must have gone through at first.
- When Maggie gets up from down the stairs, she goes down a dip in the floor.
- There is a room where Ms. Botz is rummaging through. Maggie appears from the right of the door. In the next shot, a door further down the hallway closes and Ms. Botz comes out of the room furtherest to the edge of the hallway. Maggie could not have come from the right of the door, as she would have gone through the window to get to the door.
- In the room which Ms. Botz enters, the wall is clearly pink. However, in the room, the light was off, so it would have been black. This, however, could have gone pink because of the light shining in from the hallway. Also, in the hallway, there is light, but the light is not on.
- In the room at the Off-Ramp Inn, there is two pillows when Homer and Marge are in bed. However, when they first entered the room, there was three pillows.
- In the news report of Homer, the background is a house across the street from the Simpsons'. In the first scene where Homer is interviewed, the background is the Simpsons' house.
- Arnie Pie is heard on the radio and called "Bill Pie".
Original workprint references[edit]
- For a brief moment in the scene wherein Bart pours cereal into his bowl, he reaches for the sugar, which is out of frame, and he looks at the camera.
- During the early scenes of the workprint, Marge gains and loses weight.
- In the scene where Marge puts an egg into the pan in the kitchen, the brightness of the wallpaper is different to what the color of the wallpaper is after the scene shifts to Maggie and back to Marge.
- Marge puts an egg into the pan, and a few seconds after that she picks the pan up, which has two fried eggs in it (one being the egg Marge just put in) and two rashers of bacon. The egg Marge just put into the pan would not have fried that quickly.
- Once Marge puts the pan down onto the table and kisses Maggie, the rashers of bacon in the pan have disappeared.
- Once Bart has poured the Frosty Krusty Flakes into his bowl, they instantly appear once the box goes out of frame.
- In the first scene when Marge is on the phone, the pupils in her eyes are facing different directions. The pupil in the left eye is facing southwestwards, and the pupil in the right eye is facing northwestward.
