Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode refers to an earlier Simpsons episode from the same season: "Bart Gets an "F"".
- Dr. Hibbert's look, family members, and his kitchen design are parodies of The Cosby Show.
A graph with the year 1929 references the Wall Street Crash of 1929, an event that led to the Great Depression
- On the Bouvier family quilt:
- A woman riding a horse and aiming at a buffalo references folk heroine Annie Oakley.
- One of the patches resemblances the famous photograph The Falling Soldier taken by Robert Capa in 1936.
- A graph with the year 1929 references the Wall Street Crash of 1929, which led to the Great Depression.
- Marge's patch is a yin and yang symbol with the phrase "Keep On Truckin'". This is a reference to the one-page cartoon Keep On Truckin' by Robert Crumb which was much displayed and imitated during the hippie era.

- Lisa is wearing her teal nightgown for almost the entire episode. However, she is seen wearing her usual red dress with her necklace when she is cured of the mumps.
- Lisa doesn't wear her necklace either in this episode.
Continuity[edit]
- In one episode, Bart's dog does bite his owner and Homer doesn't care.
- Kent Brockman reports that Ms. Botz has escaped from prison.
Goofs[edit]
- When Ned shows Homer his new shoes, his glasses are present in some shots and missing in others.
- In the first scene at the obedience school, Emily Winthrop (speaking in a generic English accent) angrily denounces those who use dog training methods of which she disapproves as "bloody twits". In authentic British English, the term "twit" is nearly always used in a joking of half-joking manner; even when hostile, it's still quite a mild term, not the strong one depicted here.
- As Bart is attempting to train Santa's Little Helper near the end, he unwittingly tells the dog to sit, which he does. However, due to muscle flexibility, greyhounds that have been raced at some point in their life cannot physically sit.
