Cultural references[edit]

  • The title refers to the 8th Commandment from the Old Testament, "Thou shalt not steal", which is mentioned several times during the episode.
The opening scene parodies the scene of Moses presenting the Ten Commandments in the 1956 epic religious film The Ten Commandments
  • The opening scene at Mt. Sinai parodies the scene of Moses (portrayed by Charlton Heston) presenting the Ten Commandments in the 1956 American epic religious drama film The Ten Commandments.
  • Homer is almost run over by the cable guy's truck. This sequence is a parody of the iconic crop duster scene from the 1959 American spy thriller film North by Northwest. While being attacked by an airplane, protagonist Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) tried to seek help from a truck that was passing by. The truck driver was barely able to stop before killing Thornhill, who stood in the middle of the road, in the same way Homer did to stop the cable guy.
  • Homer mentions the TV channels MTV and VH1.
  • Lisa and Homer are watching Lucha libre, the term refers to the style of professional wrestling that originated in Mexico.
  • When the family is watching films Bart mentions several scenes from them, including:
    • Quint (Robert Shaw) being eaten by the great white shark in the 1975 thriller Jaws.
    • John McClane (Bruce Willis) jumping through a window in the 1988 action film Die Hard. In the real movie, however, McClane jumps from a roof.
    • Young stockbroker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) being arrested by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the 1987 drama Wall Street.
  • Homer is watching Davey and Goliath, a Christian clay-animated children's TV series from 1961.
  • Troy McClure starred in Cry Yuma, a pun on Cry 'Havoc'.
  • When talking with Lisa about stealing, Homer refers to Ma Barker, who was the mother of several American criminals and gained a reputation as a ruthless crime matriarch who controlled and organized her sons' crimes.
  • The Top Hat Channel adult films include Stardust Mammaries and Broadcast Nudes, which are a pun on Stardust Memories and Broadcast News, respectively.
  • Homer persuades Lisa to watch the Belmont Stakes.
  • Mr. Burns brought Cheetos to the Simpsons' house.
  • Burns mentions he has seen professional boxer James J. Corbett, best known as the only man who ever defeated John L. Sullivan.
  • Bart mentions the Atlanta Braves MLB team and TV personality Joe Franklin when trying to make Homer reconsider his decision to remove cable TV.
