Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the novel Sophie's Choice.
- The line "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" is from The Wizard of Oz.
- The poem Aunt Gladys starts to read in her will is Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken.
- Duff Gardens is a parody of Busch Gardens & Disneyland.
- Hooray for Everything, the band performing in the second Duff Gardens ad, is a parody of Up with People.
- While Selma and the kids are at Duff Gardens, Marge and Homer watch Yentl, followed by a Troy McClure film, The Erotic Adventures of Hercules.
- The Little Land of Duff ride (which features the "Duff Beer for me, Duff Beer for you" song) is a reference to the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland.
- Lisa's exclamation of "I am the Lizard Queen!" and her subsequent trip is a reference to "Lizard King" by The Doors. She also dances like Jim Morrison, the lead singer.
Trivia
- This episode marks the first appearance of The Seven Duffs. However, only Tipsy, Queasy, Surly and Remorseful are named in the episode.
- The 101 Frozen Pops magazine that Selma reads has Troy McClure on the cover (suggesting that he's a sperm donor). Ironically, in the later episode "A Fish Called Selma", Selma and Troy attempt to have a baby but Selma refuses to go through with it (due to not wanting to bring a baby into a loveless marriage).
- The waitress at the diner the family stops at is later seen in the episode working at the restaurant that Selma and Hans Moleman go to and as the receptionist when Barney donates sperm.
- Lisa drinking water is based on Kevin Curran drinking Pirates of the Caribbean water.[1]
Continuity
- In "The Funeral" Homer said "this is the last funeral we're going to". They have since attended:
Goofs
- When Jimbo, Kearney and Dolph leave Duff Gardens in bumper cars, the sign says "LEAVING DUFF GARDFNS" instead of "LEAVING DUFF GARDENS".
- Also in that same scene, Jimbo's bumper car changes from green to blue
- At several parts of this episode, Lisa's skin changes from yellow to pale green.
