Cultural references[edit]
- In the beginning of the episode, Marge receives a free sample of a fictional dish soap called "Lemon Time" which Homer promptly drinks. This is a reference to the dish detergent Sunlight which was the focus of a 1982 poison control report following widespread consumption.
- Bart's vision of Marie and Pierre Curie, inventors of radium, are much like Godzilla, complete with the Japan setting.
- Smithers' song and dance number at Jack Marley's retirement party are reference to the 1941 film, Citizen Kane.
- The music from The Empire Strikes Back plays while Mr. Burns surveys his monitors in his office.
- After Marge suggests to pipe in some Tom Jones music, "What's New Pussycat?" is played.
- At the end of the episode, Tom Jones performs "It's Not Unusual" chained to the stage.
- Mr. Burns asks Smithers if he could 'dig up' Al Jolson.
- As a subplot in the story, Bart cries 'wolf' to get out of a test, in reference to The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Also, befitting the subplot is that Bart is not believed when he is attacked by an actual wolf.
- Lisa claims that Pierre and Marie Curie both died of radiation poisoning. Only Marie Curie's death was due to radiation poisoning. Pierre Curie died of a fractured skull as a result of an accident with a horse carriage. It is said by SNPP that it was too late before the fact-team realized that Pierre's death was in a traffic accident.
- When Mr. Burns is drawing on the camera with Marge on it, we can see devil horns and a goatee, however when the camera zooms out and Mr. Burns is drawing flies, the horns and goatee disappear.
- When talking to Marge, the spots on Mr. Burns head disappear for a second.
- In the film with Troy McClure, in one shot, the paintbrush is transparent.
- In some scenes before the house repair is done, the house is not slanted.
- In one scene in Burns' office, the picture of him on the wall is squashed and not drawn correctly. In the next shot, it is corrected, and in the next scene with the picture, it has been flipped.
- Mrs. Krabappel says "Bart, to avoid this test, you've had smallpox, the bends, and and that unfortunate case of rabies". However, during the rabies part, her mouth doesn't move right. It is said that she was originally going to say "Tourette's syndrome" (which is noted on SNPP), but it was changed to rabies.
- The locomotive of The Spruce Caboose is clearly supposed to be a tender locomotive, however it is missing said tender. Tenders are required by larger locomotives to supply them with coal and water that allows them to run.
- In one scene when Homer is wearing a hat, it's red, but all of a sudden, it changes to blue.
- When Homer points at the donut delivery guy, his right shirt cuff is colored yellow for a moment.
