Synopsis

Homer finally pays the mortgage and The Simpsons celebrate by going to a fancy restaurant for brunch. However Bart and Lisa get into a fight and Homer goes to Moe's Tavern to escape his family. At Moe's the health inspector comes who ends up being a good friend of Moe and passes him in everything. However the health inspector eats a pickled egg from Moe's pickled egg jar and dies. A week later a more competent inspector comes and shuts down Moe's Tavern. A funeral for the tavern is then held and Homer decides to help Moe bring the tavern up to code. To get the money to do this, Homer takes out a second mortgage on his house. Marge is mad about this and becomes Moe's business partner and believes Moe's costumers should be higher class. Marge then suggests that Moe's should become a British bar known as the Nag & Weasel and soon Moe starts renovating.

Moe's Tavern then goes from dive to fancy bar and then Marge helps Moe with his new business. Homer in the meantime is going to bed and wants to make out with Marge however it is 4 in the morning when Marge comes home and Homer believes Moe is trying to get Marge to have an affair with her.

Homer and Marge then go to a movie and are joined by Moe. This then frustrates Homer and then on a trip to The Itchy & Scratchy Land with Lenny and Carl. They say that Marge will have an emotional affair with Moe and there will be nothing Homer can do about it. Marge and Moe are then invited to a bartender convention in Aruba via a plane and Homer tries to win Marge back. Homer then rushes to the airport with Chief Wiggum and then Homer gets to the plane when it is airborne and then comes out of the toilet. Moe in the mean time finally found his true crush and decides to marry Marge. However, Homer catches up with Marge in the mean time however more chaos strikes when Homer opens up the door of the plane while it is airborne and almost everything on the plane is sucked out including Mr. Teeny however Homer closes the door in time. The threesome then land in Aruba and Moe attempts to drown himself after Marge got back with Homer. In the mean time Bart has entered himself, Lisa, and Maggie in a hot air balloon race in La Vie En Rose.

Trivia

General

  • This episode was dedicated to the memory of Johnny Carson, who died a week before this episode aired.
  • On the map in the aircraft, Springfield is shown in the middle of the ocean.
  • This episode actually has some of the most noises made by the rarely-speaking barflies Sam and Larry. They both unenthusiastically moan "Ugggh".
  • Homer calls himself "Jerkass Homer", a possible nod to what Simpsons fans called him during the Mike Scully Era in seasons 9-12.
  • Among the mourners seen alongside the regular barflies at the wake: Duffman, Dr. Nick, Kirk Van Houten, Surly Duff and a Leprechaun.

Errors

  • When Marge tells Homer she and Moe are going to Aruba. The alarm clock changes from digital to analog.
  • Itchy & Scratchy Land is shown to be within a few hours driving distance of Springfield. However, in Itchy & Scratchy Land, it is shown to be several thousand miles away.

Cultural References

  • The title is a play on the 1981 movie Mommie Dearest.
  • Over the end credits, Homer and Marge sing Captain & Tennille's song "Love Will Keep Us Together"; this was actually a deleted scene from Co-Dependent's Day.
  • In the scene where Homer chases Moe and Marge's plane on the tarmac is a spoof on the Jim Carrey movie Liar, Liar.
  • The scene where there's a new computer-animated movie from Dreamworks, Cards, parodies many other computer-animated movies, specifically Disney/Pixar's Cars, in the way that Dreamworks seems to always use similar themes for their CGI films.
  • When Homer makes a puck of his lips to kiss Marge, she goes away and Homer instead uses the puck of his lips to play the trombone where he plays Greensleeves.
  • Due to the closure of his bar, Moe tells his patrons to get their beer from a gay bar across the street, "The League of Extra-Horny Gentlemen" (a play on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) from which "Can't Get You out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue is playing. This is a reference to Minogue's status as a gay icon.
