Synopsis[edit]

When Bode Wright, a young and charismatic new preacher, comes to town and shakes things up at the church, the congregation prefers him over Reverend Lovejoy. As a result, Lovejoy begins investigating Bode's mysterious past.

Plot[edit]

The First Church of Springfield is mostly empty as the service begins, with even the choir arriving late. Reverend Lovejoy tries to get the congregation involved, but they show no interest. Meanwhile, Bode Wright arrives in Springfield. As the congregation leaves the church at the end of the service, Bode enters to apply for the position of junior minister after seeing an advertisement on Christlist placed by Helen Lovejoy. Bode gets the job after a short interview, with Helen offering to let him stay with them, much to Reverend Lovejoy's annoyance. The homeless and Alcoholics Anonymous then show up at the church.

Homer and Marge attend marriage counseling at the church after Homer sells the house without telling Marge. Reverend Lovejoy hears his train set running and goes to confront Bode. That night, Bode sleeps on the train set, and Reverend Lovejoy starts playing with it to bother him. The next morning, Lovejoy takes Bode around town and brings him to senior Bingo. While at Bingo, Lovejoy starts to lose his voice.

At the next church service, Lovejoy loses his voice completely. Bode then takes over as pastor for the service and proves a hit with everyone, singing "Amazing Grace" and getting the congregation involved. As the service continues, more and more people arrive at the church. Homer even starts to enjoy church, calling it the best church ever. After the service, the congregation heads to A Batter Place to eat pancakes. During the meal, Lisa and Bode bond over being vegetarians, science, Buddhism, and jazz music. Bode shares a Chinese proverb with the congregation, which they appreciate. Lovejoy then tells a culturally insensitive joke, which annoys everyone.

The next day, the church council informs Lovejoy that he is fired. Reverend Lovejoy and Helen decide to go to Michigan to dig up some dirt on Bode. Meanwhile, Homer and Marge visit Bode for marriage counseling, and he helps them immediately. Later that day, Lisa meditates with Bode and tells him that he has sparked a full-blown religious revival in town, with many people returning to religion.
