"Krusty the Clown" is the eighth episode of broadcast season 30 of The Simpsons and the six hundred forty-seventh episode overall. It originally aired on November 25, 2018. The episode was written by Ryan Koh and directed by Matthew Faughnan. It guest stars Billy Eichner as Billy and Peter Serafinowicz as the Google-Disney CEO.
Synopsis[edit]
- Homer finds his calling as a TV recapper, but his harsh grading causes a brawl with Krusty. After almost killing Homer, Krusty hides out at a real circus and finds happiness there.
Plot[edit]
At an editorial meeting for the Daily Fourth Gradian, Skinner announces that sales are down, so he hires a new editor, Billy, who brings the journal online-only and assigns Lisa to be a simple TV recapper.
At home, she asks Homer to help her with the job as they watch The Krusty the Clown Show, starting with the Itchy & Scratchy episode Death Shawarma-ed Over. Sideshow Mel notifies Krusty of the recap, which gives him very low marks.
Krusty gets furious and tries to kill Homer with his car. They struggle while driving and end up in an accident. Bart arrives at the scene, relieved that Krusty is still alive, and takes him away to a circus, where Krusty changes his name to Soggy the Clown, while Homer becomes famous.
Meanwhile, Krusty's job at the circus is a disaster, and he gets fired. But when one of the performers falls ill, he steps in, performs well, and gets rehired, finding happiness. However, due to a poorly made video they sell at the circus, it gets shut down.
Meanwhile, Homer stops his work after it begins to affect his relationship with Marge. He is then picked up by Google-Disney's CEO and taken to the company's office, where the CEO unveils a plan to fool Americans into believing they are watching shows, when in reality they're only seeing endless commercials. Homer recaps the whole plan and posts it online.
The circus closes down, but the manager says he only needs $50,000 to reopen it. To save the circus, he offers to turn himself in, and the police give them the money. At the court, the jury finds him not guilty. The circus leaves town, and Krusty says goodbye before returning to his show, which is now reviewed by Ralph, who gives it an A grade. Billy, angered by the headline, changes it to one about cooking scrambled eggs.
Production[edit]
In a deleted scene, Krusty yells at his writers after Homer's recap and threatens them.[1]
Reception[edit]
"Krusty the Clown" was nominated for a 2019 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Bart's Not Dead".[2]
