Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a pun on the children's song "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?"
- The animal welfare groups that Lisa is a member of are spoofs of several real-life groups:
- The Annual Springfield to Shelbyville Birditarod (the fake bird race which Moe makes up) is a pun on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race which is held annually in Alaska.
- The song Mr. Burns ballet dances to is "The Garland Waltz" from the 1890 ballet Sleeping Beauty.
- The music that plays during Bart's and Milhouse's messaging montage is "The Typewriter" by Leroy Anderson.
- Raymond Bird is a possible reference to the Canadian actor Raymond Burr.
- The music played when Bart tries to release Ray is the melody of "The Summer Knows", written by Michel Legrand.
- Martin, Database, Milhouse and Nelson perform "Put On a Happy Face" from Bye Bye Birdie.
- The featured Itchy & Scratchy short, "Dogday Hellody of 1933" is a reference to the Genesis song Broadway Melody of 1974, although the plot resembles that of the 1935 Disney short "Pluto's Judgement Day", where a dog is tried by a courtroom full of cats in Hell (in this case, Itchy as the judge and several Scratchys as the jury) for cruelty to animals. Several famous 1930s Hollywood actors appear as caricatures during this segment: Edward G. Robinson, Will Rogers, Bing Crosby, W. C. Fields and Harpo Marx.
- In Latin America, this episode was released as the sixth episode of the season for unknown reasons.
Continuity[edit]
- In the scene before the Itchy & Scratchy episode, Santa's Little Helper is colored a much darker brown than usual.
