Donuts is a donut shop in Springfield. Its advertising sign is a giant metal donut on the roof.
History[edit]
When the Springfield Monorail was built, the track passed very near to the donut shop. During the monorial's maiden run, its brakes failed and it sped out of control. With no other means of stopping the monorail (due to its being solar-powered), designer Sebastian Cobb suggested to Homer (the conductor) that he use an anchor to bring the train to a stop. Homer and Bart, who was also on board, tied the "M" from the monorail's sign to a rope, secured it inside the train and threw it out the window. The anchor bounced at the end of the rope (damaging trees, streets and buildings) until it lodged in the donut shop's giant advertising donut, stopping the train and prompting Homer to marvel, "Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?"
Behind the Laughter[edit]
The giant metal donut on the roof of the store resembles the giant metal donut on the roof of Randy's Donuts, a real-life donut store in Inglewood, California, USA.
