Corvair was the space shuttle designed by NASA to carry astronauts into space
History[edit]
After witnessing a decline in popularity—evidenced by falling TV ratings for shuttle launches—NASA decided to improve its public image by sending someone into space with whom the average American could relate. Homer Simpson accidentally became that astronaut, joining Buzz Aldrin and Race Banyon aboard the space shuttle Corvair. Their mission led to various comedic situations and an ultimately unexpected journey into space.
While aboard the shuttle, Homer smuggled a bag of potato chips onboard. Unaware of the consequences, he opened the bag in zero gravity, causing the chips to float around and risk clogging the instruments. In an attempt to fix the situation, Homer began eating the chips mid-air, but in doing so, he crashed into an experimental ant colony, destroying it and releasing the ants into the shuttle. Chaos escalated as the ants damaged the navigation system.
To resolve the situation, the crew vented the ants out through the front hatch. However, Homer had forgotten to secure his "shuttle belt" and was nearly blown out of the open hatch. He managed to grab the handle and cling to it for dear life. Buzz Aldrin pulled him back inside, but the intense vacuum caused Homer to break the hatch handle. In a stroke of accidental genius, he used a carbon rod to seal the hatch, allowing the shuttle to return safely to Earth.
