Synopsis
- "In this Flanders family-focused episode, Todd blames God for the death of his mother and rejects his faith - causing great distress for Ned, who sends him to live with the Simpsons in an attempt to scare him back into God's arms."
Plot
Maude appears in dream to Ned as a ghost, calling him, him thinking she come back and asks her to kiss him one last time, before revealing it was his dog Baz kissing him instead. Ned is crying and Todd enters asking him why and he says it's because he dreamed about Maude and asks him if he ever dreams about her.
Todd recollects his dreams, where he's in a happy land, dragged by Maude, and the cart that holds him trips and when Maude turns around she's faceless, scaring him and the bear that comes to his rescue. Todd doesn't remember his mother's look and Rod comes in with a mask on his face, making him look faceless in the shadows too, scaring Todd.
They then go watch a Christmas recording of their family, where they're decorating the tree, and Grampa interrupts them thinking it's his house and they invite him to stay at dinner. Todd starts to believe there's no point in believing what he has no proof of when Ned tells him he doesn't have one of Maude being in a better place.
At church, Reverend Lovejoy invites the kids to say what they'd want to ask to baby Jesus if they could speak to him and Todd says he'd tell him thanks for nothing because his mom is dead and that he doesn't believe in God anymore, shocking everyone.
Ned is shocked to the core and repremends his action, while Todd keeps questioning God's actions and when not even the Reverend could help him, he prays to god to punish his son. The next morning Todd refuses to say Amen to the prayer for the breakfast and Ned asks himself what can put fear of god back in Todd, and finds a solution in the Simpson House when Bart tricks Homer in staying outside in his underwear.
Lisa tries to bring him to Buddhism but fails, and she asks Buddha who he reincarnated David Bowie as, and a mosquito with Bowie's face shows up, asking for help. At breakfast, Bart complains that Todd has cleaned his room, while Todd speaks directly to Grampa, a thing not even Amazon Alexa would do anymore, him having her. At night, Marge refuses to have some bed fun with Homer thinking Todd would hear them, and Todd confirms it, and Homer says they've to get rid of him.
The next morning, Homer tries to convince him God drew Jesus on a piece of bread as a sign, but Todd still refused to believe it, so Bart takes him where the bullies were throwing rocks down a cliff, but even Kearney's beliefs didn't help as he says the bullies are all going to Hell.
Todd tells Homer the reason he doesn't believe is because his mother is never coming back and asks Homer if he knows what he fells, and Homer remembers his mother, Mona, making him cry too. Homer goes to Moe's to forget but is surprisingly joined in drinking by Ned, and they become friends in alcohol, before being hit by Hans Moleman's car.
They're greeted in Heaven by Edna Krabappel and Maude, John the Baptist and God. After a movie argument with Abraham Lincoln, God gives them passes, but shows they're just visitors' so their bodies are not dead yet. The families are seen at their hospital beds. Springfielders shows up at the hospital to support the lifes of the ones that touched their heart, with Homer only having Moe, Lenny and Duffman on his side.
After being convinced by Marge and seeing even Bart praying, Todd prays too to God and Jesus (and Buddha) to bring his dad back, and it worked as Ned returns to his body. Homer is then met by Mona, that finally has a chance to say goodbye and bring closure with him.
They woke back up and the families are reunited. Afterwards, Lisa goes to Buddha without closing the deal by bringing Todd to Buddhism, failing, and asks for another chance, and brings Ralph Wiggum to him, which blews his mind with his weird knowledge. At night, Maude tucks in Rod and Todd, while Edna shouts "Ha" to Ned.
