- The way the Duff Blimp crashes parodies the Hindenburg disaster.
- Kent Brockman shouts "Oh, the humanity!", parodying exactly the same famous phrase by Herbert Morrison, the American radio journalist who recorded for broadcast his dramatic report of the disaster.
- The way Lisa is announced as Little Miss Springfield is a parody of the iconic first inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson that took place on board the Air Force One on Friday, November 22, 1963 following the assassination of US president John F. Kennedy.
- Marge is standing beside Lisa with a somber look on her face and wearing a pink Chanel dress and a pillbox hat, referencing Jacqueline Kennedy.

- This episode has been used in England by the Anglican Church to give kids lessons in self-esteem, as well as pointing out Homer's sale of the Duff beer ticket, marking a sacrifice on his part as Lisa's self-worth has more value to him than his pleasure.

- At the pageant, after Amber wins, there is nobody on the stands. However, when Lisa turns to leave, the contestants are on the stands.
- When Krusty the Clown arrives at the beauty pageant, his tie is done up. When he goes on stage, it is undone.
- When Lisa waves to the crowd from the parade float, Bleeding Gums Murphy can be seen in the background with yellow skin.
- Krusty's nose turns white during the opening number for the winner of the Little Miss Springfield pageant.
- When Lisa is sworn in as Little Miss Springfield, Marge's dress turns from green in the long shot to pink in the close up.
