Cultural references[edit]

  • The title of the episode is a reference to the classic novel and film Double Indemnity as well as the clause of the same name in an insurance policy.
  • The episode was originally to be titled "Mutual of Momaha," a reference to the insurance company, "Mutual of Omaha."
  • The song that plays during the montage of Moe and Renee dating is "I'm a Believer" by The Monkees.
  • The song Homer sings, "Stealing, stealing, stealing a car for Moe" is sung to the tune of "Sailing, Sailing (Over The Bounding Main)".
  • The movie in the drive-in theater has a scene of the monkey President jumping out of Air Force One. This is a reference to the movie Air Force One, where the President of the USA, played by Harrison Ford, jumps off the plane in a parachute.
  • The shot of Homer watching the drive-in movie with the train passing in the background is a reference to Hotshot Eastbound, a photograph taken by O. Winston Link in 1956.
  • Homer's ghost resembled Jacob Marley from the Dickens novel A Christmas Carol.
  • The Shawshank Redemption:
    • Hans Moleman, pushing the book cart in the jail, is dressed very similarly to Brooks the prison librarian in the movie.
    • The book cart plays a part in both Homer's escape from jail and main character Andy Dufresne's escape from Shawshank.
  • The song that plays at the end of the episode is "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" by George Thorogood & The Destroyers.
  • The shot of the train mirrors Back to the Future Part III.

Trivia[edit]

  • When the people on the cruise are slow dancing, Edna Krabappel is seen dancing with Principal Skinner, but later on, she is seen with Kirk Van Houten.
  • When the people are dancing in Disco Stu's, we can see Luann Van Houten with brown hair.
  • In this episode, the Police station is labelled "Jail". It is quite possible that both are in the same building, a la "The Andy Griffith Show."

Continuity[edit]

Goofs[edit]

  • At the dance club, Luann Van Houten is shown with light brown hair instead of blue. She may have dyed it this color for the club.
  • When the chimpanzee jumps from the plane in the movie Hail to the Chimp!, the top section of his tie is not colored in for a frame.
  • The daisy on Moe's car has five petals as it is driven off the cliff, yet has six petals when it bubbles up to the surface.
