Kentucky Fried Panda (abbreviated KFP) is a fast food restaurant located on Springfield's Fast-Food Boulevard. It serves panda. The restaurant's advertising slogan, as displayed in the window, is "Finger Ling-Ling Good!"

History

The restaurant holds the rather dubious distinction of having been destroyed twice in Simpsons-related incidents.

First Destruction

When the Rich Texan tried to cut down Springfield's oldest redwood tree, Lisa Simpson lived in the tree to protect it. Her efforts were for naught as the tree was felled anyway, due to being struck by lightning. Lisa wasn't in the tree at the time (having taken a break to visit home), but because no one knew that, everyone thought she was dead. The Rich Texan announced he was turning the forest into a sanctuary in Lisa's memory, but later changed his mind and decided to turn the forest into an amusement park, called "Lisa-land". He sprang the idea on everyone at a memorial service in the forest for Lisa, unveiling the tree's log which he had stood upright and made into a sign advertising the park.

At this, Lisa revealed herself as being alive and denounced the amusement park idea. Jesse Grass cut the log's supporting guy wires and it toppled over and slid down the mountain. The log acted like a giant battering ram, knocking over everything it ran into, and when it reached Springfield's business district, it destroyed a large number of businesses. The log also hit Fast-Food Boulevard, destroying Kentucky Fried Panda and causing Homer to cry out in dismay, echoing KFP's advertising slogan: "Noooooo!! It was finger-ling-ling good!"[1]

Second Destruction

Homer was about to start a new diet, so he went to Fast-Food Boulevard for a last-minute junk food binge, eating food from several restaurants. When Homer stopped at Krusty Burger, he was enthralled by a talking wastebasket in the drive-thru and decided to use it to throw away the debris from his binge. After that, he decided to take the opportunity to get rid of all the accumulated trash in his car. Among the items Homer threw away was a leaky car battery. Acid from the battery seeped into the ground, dripped onto an underground gas main and ate a hole in the pipe, causing a gas leak. Meanwhile, Homer finished with his trash disposal and lit up a cigar. He then tossed the lit match into the wastebasket where it ignited the leaking gas and triggered a chain-reaction explosion which destroyed every restaurant on Fast-Food Boulevard, including Kentucky Fried Panda.[2]

Behind the Laughter

  • The restaurant is a parody of Kentucky Fried Chicken (known as KFC for short).
  • It may also be a reference to the fast-food chain Panda Express, which serves American-Chinese cuisine.
  • KFP's advertising slogan, "Finger Ling-Ling Good", is a reference to KFC's advertising slogan, "Finger-Lickin' Good", and to either or both of two famous giant pandas named Ling-Ling:
    • Ling-Ling of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing fame, who lived from 1969 to 1992. The pair were a gift from China to the USA in 1972.
    • Ling Ling, who resided at the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo and lived from 1985 to 2008.
      • However, Ling-Ling/Hsing-Hsing Ling-Ling is more likely, as his/her name is hyphenated.
