Cultural references
- The episode title is an obvious play on I Love Lucy.
- KBBL DJ Marty plays "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett both on Valentine's Day and President's Day.
- The candy valentine hearts that have love messages on them are seen in this episode. The only difference is the ones Bart uses were sprayed with messages by him with insults such as U Stink.
- Ned Flanders serenades Maude with a considerably cleaned-up version of the Rod Stewart song "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?".
- The Vietnamese memories of Skinner in Da Nang show a boat identical to that in the film Apocalypse Now, and the crew members resemble Lance B. Johnson (Sam Bottoms), Jay "Chef" Hicks (Frederic Forrest) and Tyrone "Mr. Clean" Miller (Laurence Fishburne).
- The title of the The Itchy & Scratchy Show episode "My Bloody Valentine" is a reference to the 1981 film My Bloody Valentine.
- The Krusty the Clown 29th Anniversary Special, complete with clips of past shows, is a spoof of Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
- Homer stole Ned's Oral Roberts University diploma.
- The adult film Debbie Does Springfield played at Springfield-X is a parody of Debbie Does Dallas.
- Ex-president Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn attended Krusty's 29th Anniversary show.
- In one of Krusty's clips, American poet Robert Frost is reading his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". Suddenly, Krusty interrupts him and says "Hey, Frosty! How'd you like some snow, man?", a reference to Frosty the Snowman.
- In his 1973 Psychedelic rock clip, "Kroon Along With Krusty", Krusty performs "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" by The Doors.
- Groundskeeper Willie does an impression of Scotty from Star Trek when Skinner orders him to put more water in the orange juice.
- "Hail to the Chief" plays during the President's day act opening.
- The song "We Are the Mediocre Presidents" mentions US presidents Zachary Taylor, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Rutherford B. Hayes and William Henry Harrison.
- Bart does an impersonation of Richard Nixon with his butt.
- Bart also portrays John Wilkes Booth, famous for murdering Abraham Lincoln (who is portrayed by Milhouse) at Ford's Theatre.
- When Bart (as John Wilkes Booth) is about to shoot Lincoln, he says "Hasta la vista, Abie", a parody of "Hasta la vista, baby", the famous catchphrase in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
- Bart also mentions former US president Chester A. Arthur.
- Ralph portrays George Washington while Lisa is Martha Washington.
- The song "America the Beautiful" is played at the end of the act.
Trivia
- Ralph is revealed to be Chief Wiggum's son.
- At one point, Ralph states that he is going to marry Lisa. Ironically, in "Lisa the Simpson", Lisa fantasises about being married to Ralph
Goofs
- Up until the presidents play, Lewis is given yellow skin, brown hair and a pink shirt.
- After Homer says "I'd sell my first-born son", the view switches to a close-up of Bart saying "Hey!", who has suddenly gained a can of Buzz Cola and a thin silver implement in his hands, which were empty in the previous scene. That scene seems to have been copied from another episode where it was part of an eating sequence, the thin silver implement likely being a piece of cutlery.
