  • CostMo Foods is a parody of Costco.
  • Bart and Lisa have tubes of what looks like Pringles at CostMo Foods.
  • Maggie swallowed a Time magazine.
  • Homer had a Burke's Law lunchbox as a kid, with Amos Burke on the front.
  • One of the things on the Animal Crackers box is a fight with Muhammad Ali.
  • One of the names Tanzania changes to is "Pepsi Presents New Zanzibar".
  • When Kitenge is driving the Simpsons on a safari, you can see Pride Rock from The Lion King in the background. The sunrise, silhouettes of animals and the rhythmic music are all reminiscent of the opening moments of the film.
  • When Homer is singing along to the radio, he sings "Good Morning Starshine" from the musical Hair.
  • The sign for Victoria Falls has the double black diamond symbol on it which is the most difficult rating for a run on a ski hill.
  • When the enraged hippo rears up, Homer exclaims "A hungry hungry hippo!", a reference to the popular board game Hungry Hungry Hippos. Incidentally, one of the four hippos in the game is called Homer Hippo.
  • Dr. Joan Bushwell is a parody of Jane Goodall, an English zoologist who became famous worldwide for her research into the behavior of chimpanzees.
  • When the man from Greenpeace says that Dr. Bushwell has hidden diamonds everywhere, Marge replies, "Even on the soles of her shoes", referencing the Paul Simon song "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".
  • The pictures of monkeys from famous movies include Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz and King Kong.
  • The president of "Tanzania/New Zanzibar/Pepsi presents New Zanzibar" of the episode Muntu, is identical to Mobutu Sese Seko President of Zaire from 1965 to 1997.
  • Muhammad Ali's presence on the Animal Crackers box is a reference to the historic boxing match called "The Rumble in the Jungle"between him and George Foreman which took place in Africa.

  • The neck rings Lisa is given is a tradition in Myanmar, not Tanzania.
  • Bart's lip plate is an Ethiopian tradition for women in the Mursi tribe.
  • Victoria Falls is in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • There is no reason given why the family did not get food from the Kwik-E-Mart or any other convenience store that wasn't affected by the bag-boy strike.
