- The episode title is a pun on "In God We Trust", the official motto of the USA, which appears on all American coins and currency.
- The name of The Itchy & Scratchy Show episode "Deaf Comedy Blam!" is a reference to the TV series Def Comedy Jam.
- Principal Skinner and Agnes Skinner rented the movie The Man Without a Face. However, Agnes put cardboard over her half of the television, so Principal Skinner didn't even know the main character had a problem.
- In Reverend Lovejoy's flashback, the song "Jesus Is Just Alright" by The Doobie Brothers plays.
- In the flashback, Ned Flanders tells Lovejoy that he was talked into doing the Bump dance, and his buttocks came into contact with the buttocks of another young man.
- Mr. Sparkle is from the sacred foresof Thunderbird 2, from the children's series Thunderbirds, which first aired on ITV1 in 1965. This version of Thunderbird 2, which is seen in the child's room, is silver, as opposed to green. It refers to the fact that Thunderbirds has a cult following in Japan,.
- The Sea Captain goes to Marge to talk about his Game Boy, which he had apparently lost at sea.
- At the Springfield City Zoo, one of the attractions is the "Habitat for Huge Manatees", a reference to the Christian nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity.
- The Sunday after Reverend Lovejoy rescues Ned from the "Baboon County USA" exhibit at the Zoo, the sermon topic at the First Church of Springfield is "Conquest of the County of the Apes", a reference to the film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes from the Planet of the Apes franchise.
- In the library, Homer presses the buttons on the phone 19 times to get through to Japan.
- The number Homer dials to get through, when run through a DTMF analyzer, is 9657153618965713561.
- Errors in the first church scene:
- Julius Hibbert's daughter is among the churchgoers seen attempting to ask Marge questions. However, in said scene, she has yellow skin.
- Rev. Lovejoy's rear fender is gray when they pull up to Donny's Discount Gas, but in the next shot it is red like the rest of the car.
- Sarah Wiggum has blue hair in the church scene at the end of the episode.
