Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a pun on "In God We Trust", the official motto of the USA which appears on all American coins and currency.
- The Sea Captain goes to Marge to talk about his Game Boy which he had apparently lost at sea.
- The Mr. Sparkle commercial features a cameo appearance by Thunderbird 2, from Gerry Anderson's children's series Thunderbirds, which first aired on ITV1 in 1965. This version of Thunderbird 2, which is seen in the child's room, is silver, as opposed to the 'real' Thunderbird 2, which was green. It refers to the fact that Thunderbirds has a cult following in Japan, like it does in England and in other parts of the world.
- The Sunday after Reverend Lovejoy rescues Ned from the "Baboon County USA" exhibit at the Springfield Zoo, the sermon topic at the First Church of Springfield is "Conquest of the County of the Apes", a reference to the film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes from the Planet of the Apes franchise.
- The Itchy and Scratchy episode is a reference to the 1995–96 French nuclear tests in French Polynesia.
- In the library, Homer presses the buttons on the phone 19 times to get through to Japan.
- The number Homer dials to get through, when run through a DTMF analyzer, is 9657153618965713561.
- One of the saints who appears to Reverend Lovejoy is named St. Bartholomew.
- In a deleted scene, Jasper Beardley was the last minister before Lovejoy.
Continuity[edit]
- Marge tells the Sea Captain that he needs to accept that his Game Boy is gone. In the Treehouse of Horror comic story Gnaws, in exchange for killing a giant Blinky, one of the items the Sea Captain demands is a replacement Game Boy for "the one the sea claimed".
- In the church crowd scene towards the beginning of the episode, Lenny has gray-brown hair instead of his usual dark brown hair.
- Sarah Wiggum's blue hair
- A few shots after the former error, Sarah Wiggum has blue hair.
- And a few shots after that, Martin Prince, Sr. has sunglasses instead of clear glasses.
- In the closeup of Rev. Lovejoy putting up the next church topic, the board is much bigger and empty.
- The blue rectangle on the back of the Mr. Sparkle box changes size significantly throughout the scene when Homer first picks it up.
- When Marge is talking to Moe on the phone, the flat circles at each end of Marge's phone briefly disappear.
- Dr. Hibbert's daughter is among the churchgoers seen attempting to ask Marge questions. However, in said scene, she has yellow skin.
- When Reverend Lovejoy gives his "sermon" about his experience at the zoo, Chief Wiggum can be seen from the back with a gray-blue color of hair usually used only for the elderly.
- Rev. Lovejoy's rear fender is grey when they pull up to Donny's Discount Gas but in the next shot it is red like the rest of the car(which also looks like it could be the third left-handed roadster).
