Cultural references

• The title is a reference to the movie Million Dollar Baby, which was previously parodied in "Million-Dollar Abie".
• Homer and Marge perform "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," which originally appeared in the 1937 film Shall We Dance. The song is sung several times during the episode.
• The Old Jewish man says he misses History Channel.
• The name of the store Circuit Circus is a reference to Circus Circus.

Mr. Burns feels like he was in St Andrews Links when he was playing Zii Sports, a parody of Wii Sports

• The Funtendo Zii is an obvious parody of the Nintendo Wii.
  • When playing Zii Golf, Mr. Burns felt as if he was "mashing the tufty on the links at St. Andrews's". St Andrews Links is considered to be the "Home of Golf" and has one of the oldest golf courses in the world.
  • Zii Sports is an obvious parody of Wii Sports.
• The Wilhelm scream can be heard repeatedly in the military game that Mr. Burns plays, which in turn is a parody of Call of Duty: World at War.
• Mr. Burns stopped enjoying the game when he found out he was actually shooting Nazi soldiers. A statue of Adolf Hitler doing the Nazi salute can also be seen.
• In his "lucky day", Homer finds an Emerson, Lake & Palmer compact disk on the floor. When he plays it in his car, the song "Lucky Man" can be heard while Homer sings along.
• Some of the books seen at the Kwik-E-Mart:
  • I Was Right But I'm A Jerk by famous American baseball player José Canseco. Canseco has been subjected to many legal issues and controversies during his life.
  • The Bourne Retirement, a reference to the Bourne novel series which were adapted into several live-action films.
  • The Slumdog Millionaire Cookbook, a reference to the Slumdog Millionaire drama film set in Mumbai.
• Both Dave Rothman and Valerie Togasaki work at coffeehouses, with Dave working at Seattle's Best and Valerie at Starbucks.
  • According to Dave's wedding vow, the things the two have in common is season two of Mad Men.

• When Homer gets the lotto money, he hesitates whether to buy "Hitler's baseball" or a mirror that gives him advice. The Magic Mirror from Snow White suddenly appears and tells him to buy the baseball.
• The "adult magazines" Homer was hiding in the tree included two editions of The Economist. The titles included "New challenges for Indonesia", and "Special report on the Ural Mountains".
• Abe compares himself with Bill Tilden when he was playing Zii Tennis. Tilden was the world No. 1 player for six years and won 14 Major singles titles.
• The moving equipment company U Tote is a parody of U-Haul.
• Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 is heard when Homer buys presents for his family.

• When the line at the Kwik-E-Mart is first shown, some characters are shown to be cut-off by the shelving.
