Cultural references

• The title of the episode is a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
• The couch gag is a reference to some 1980's movies and series, such as Miami Vice, Kung Fury, Scarface and Knight Rider. Marty McFly and Doc Brown from Back to the Future also appear.
  • The song played in the Couch Gag is called "Scarface (Push it to the Limit)" and was written for the soundtrack of the movie Scarface, one of the movies parodied.
• Groundskeeper Willie as a poetry class teacher reads Robert Burns's poem "The Answer" as the class is in complete disarray.
• Milhouse mentions the movie American Sniper when asking Mrs. Berrera if she already killed someone with a sniper rifle.
• Homer's song "Pretty Sober" is a parody of "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins.
• Buzz Milk by Buzz Cola is based on Fairlife by The Coca-Cola Company. Dietitians and nutritionists were generally critical of Fairlife when it was introduced in the market.

• The "healthy sprinkling of transuranic elements," each shown as in the periodic table with its name, atomic symbol, number, and weight, that are added to milk include:
  • Neptunium, Plutonium, Americium, Curium, Berkelium and Californium
  • A mystery element shown with a skull as symbol and question marks for name, number, and weight.
• Homer references Michelle Pfeiffer and Coolio, who sung "Gangsta's Paradise" in Dangerous Minds, one of the movies she starred in.
• Bart imagines that he and Mrs. Berrera are traipsing over the globe while "Tuesday Afternoon' sung by the Moody Blues is played. Lands touched down on include:
  • Wrestlevania, a reference to the annual WWE pay-per-view WrestleMania.
  • No Reading Railroad, a play on "Reading" as both a school subject and, pronounced as "redding" a reference to the Reading Railroad.
  • Moon River, a reference to the song "Moon River" by Henry Mancini—but this Moon River is full of floating buttocks, that is, "mooning."
• Bart says he was visited by the "Ghost of Puberty Present", a reference to the Ghost of Christmas Present from A Christmas Carol.
• Noticing the cleft chin on his freshly shaved face, Homer exclaims "Well, hello, Billy Zane!"
• Skinner says that Mrs. Berrera has never seen an episode of Friends. Bart is surprised, and when he was about to ask for the episode "The One With...", Skinner interrupts him. Almost every episode of Friends start with "The One With" in the title.
• Principal Skinner mentions Mrs. Berrera has a cat named "Bowie" with different colored eyes, a reference to David Bowie's different colored eyes. Coincidentally, the day the episode aired, Bowie died from cancer at the age of 69.
• Skinner mentions pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens.
• When the live school pets stream out of the candy box, Mrs. Berrera remarks dryly to Skinner "Your candy box is full of chupacabras".
  • Skinner replies that they must have been "pranked or possibly punk'd", a reference to the pranks TV show Punk'd.
• Marge unhappily points out to Lisa that Lisa has become "a makeup expert, like Ace Frehley."
• Lisa said she gave her money to the NPR.
• Skinner thought he could learn how to ski by watching YouTube videos.
• Bart mentions the Carnegie Hall.

Continuity

• Eddie Muntz shows up and Nelson talks about him leaving his family, saying that he was going to the store for a pack of cigarettes. ("Sleeping with the Enemy")
• Patty spies on Mrs. Berrera from the window, showing again she's lesbian. ("There's Something About Marrying")
• Homer already taught Bart how to shave before. ("One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish")
• Bart writes on a wall "Skinner is a wiener" ("Bart the Genius"), he says that is the first time after 30 years. However, the episode aired in 1990.
• Homer shaved his beard and it immediately grew back on his face afterwards previously while getting ready for his date with Marge. ("Some Enchanted Evening")

Trivia

• Due to the NFL ending late, the episode was delayed by 20 minutes.
• Milhouse reveals that he had a crush on Edna Krabappel.
• Snake Jailbird's prisoner number is "7F20". Snake made his first appearance in the episode "The War of the Simpsons", which has the production code "7F20".

Goofs

• Marge says to Lisa "A week ago, you'd never even worn makeup.", but in the previous episode, "The Girl Code", aired a week before this one, Lisa did wear makeup.
  • Lisa already wore makeup in older episodes, such as "Lard of the Dance", "The President Wore Pearls", "Smart and Smarter" and many others.
• In the middle of the episode the trio (Mrs. Berrera, Bart and Skinner) are in the playground and Skinner calls her Herrera, not Berrera. This is not only in the audio track, but the captions on Hulu also spell it with an "H" this one and only time on the episode (each and every other incident spells it with a "B").
