- The episode title is a reference to the song "Full Heart, Empty Moon" by Belly.
- "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet plays when the Squeaky-Voiced Teen is getting ready for his day.
- "Enchantment Under the Retractable Hoops" is a reference to the "Enchantment Under the Sea" school dance in Back to the Future.
- Engine Head is a parody of the heavy metal band Motörhead.
- Mötley Cröw is a parody of the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe.
- The Squeaky-Voiced Teen has a copy of The Dirt and one of their posters.
- Homer's attorney is a parody of Ben Matlock from Matlock.
- Comic Book Guy says that the jury was disappointed it was a real trial and not a hidden-camera comedy reality show, a reference to Jury Duty.
- Wiccapedia is a parody of Wikipedia.
- Rick Steves shows to Homer his book, Best of Dream World, referencing his series of travel books.
- The TV show he mentions is a nod to Rick Steves' Europe. On it, Steves is eating gratin dauphinois while heading to Montrachet vineyard in eastern France.

- The dog is biting a San Francisco 49ers football.
- The song "Challengers: Match Point" by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and part of the tennis-film Challengers, is heard when the elders play noodleball. The song is heard again during the professional match.
- Noodleball shares some similarities with pickleball, including its name, backyard origins, and rapid growth especially in the United States. Its style of play, however, is more similar to that of padel, another fast-growing racket sport.
