- The couch gag is set inside a Macintosh computer.
- Lisa does a book report on The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary.
- Dude vs. Food is a parody of the TV series Man v. Food.
- Thad Parkour is a parody of celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
- Lisa and Bart play "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" on the saxophone.
- Luigi's line "We asked: "Could-a we make it?" We never asked "Should-a we make it?"" is a reference to the Jurassic Park quote "Scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" by Ian Malcolm.
- The sign outside Springfield General Hospital references how people increasingly rely on WebMD, an American corporation which publishes online news and information about human health and well-being.
- The word "Gewalteintopf" is formed by the German words "gewalt" (violence) and "eintopf" (stew).
- One of Springfield's most powerful families was formed by "This Thing of Ours", a way to refer to the American mafia.

- The son swap is a parody of the Fargo episode "Welcome to the Alternate Economy" where the Moskowitz Syndicate and the Milligan Concern traded each other's sons to keep the peace between the two gangs.
